A new team on pole?

The quickest driver on a Saturday in Monaco for the last six outings has been either a
Mercedes, a Red Bull or a Ferrari.

Lewis Hamilton and Daniel Ricciardo (in his Red Bull days) both have two poles under
their belt from 2015 to 2021.

In fact, a search through the dusty archives reveals the last driver to secure the coveted
Monaco pole position who didn't compete for one of those three teams was Jenson
Button for Brawn in 2009.

Sebastian Vettel was deeply unhappy on the radio as he hurtled towards the red Ferrari
of Sainz.
Here's what he said straight aer the incident: "What was that man?! Whooooaaaa! They
can't do that. They can't do that! Man, that was close. *****!"

And then he said something a bit crude that I won't repeat. But you get the idea.

Stewards also note that Ferrari gave Sainz incorrect info in the Sebastian Vettel incident
at Massenet later in the session (which caused Vettel to say he had had a major scare). A
verdict on that is awaited.

Reprimand for Sainz

Andrew Benson
BBC Sport’s chief F1 writer in Monaco

A reprimand for Carlos Sainz and a €25,000 fine for Ferrari for impeding Lance Stroll at
Rascasse in final practice. Driver "was given a series of grossly incorrect messages about
the gaps to the cars behind... due to the poor rear visibility (there), the driver was relying
on team.

"The driver of Car 55 almost came to a stop on the circuit. This is unacceptable and
hence the penalty of a reprimand is imposed. We note that similar behaviour by any
driver during Qualification may involve much more severe penalties."

Qualifying in Monaco is so exciting and so exhilarating - they are the two best adjectives
for it.

It's the best day in a Formula 1 car for the drivers. The feeling of speed is through the
roof. The feeling of pressure is there as well because it's so crucial this qualifying session.

It's still the one you want to win.

Who makes the top three this year?

Due to that red flag in the dying moments of qualifying, this is how the front of the pack
looked in Monte Carlo in 2021.

Fast forward a year, and only Sergio Perez at the Saudi Arabia Grand Prix in March has
managed to break up the pole monopoly Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen have had
over the rest of the field.

Now, there’s nothing stopping Valtteri Bottas in his Alfa Romeo claiming third spot again
– anything is possible – but realistically, who do you think will master Monaco and line up
first, second and third on the grid tomorrow?

Rewind: What happened in 2021?

We travel back to May 2021 now to relive last year’s qualifying in Monaco.

Charles Leclerc took a surprise pole position despite crashing on his final run of the
shootout.

With only 18 seconds remaining and Max Verstappen hurtling towards taking Leclerc’s
spot at the front of the grid, the Ferrari man clipped the barriers with his front-right tyre,
bumped over the kerb and was sent crunched into the wall around the swimming pool
section.

There was also a nervous wait for Leclerc to see if he would need a gearbox replacement
and with it, the risk of a five-place grid penalty.

Luckily, the Ferrari was passed fit and it was all looking rosy for the Monegasque’s home
race.

For now…

No mistakes this weekend

Leclerc might not be so lucky this time if an error creeps up on him without warning.

Just seven days ago, we watched the 24-year-old spin on his first lap of final qualifying
on Spanish soil. However, he then found that champion’s magic in his locker to pull out a
pole-securing time – his fourth of the season.

Title rival Max Verstappen was the unfortunate driver on the end of a loss of power and
had to settle for second on the grid.

The home contingent were full of cheer as Carlos Sainz qualified in third.

'Risk versus reward'

Qualifying day in Monaco. Formula 1 does not really get bigger or better than this. Risk
versus reward. Glory versus shame. And for Charles Leclerc a home grand prix victory
very much a possibility.

The Ferrari driver was fastest in both practice sessions on Friday, and looks the man to
beat, as he was expected to be. Today is the day that could make or break his weekend,
as it did last year, aer he crashed at the end of qualifying, securing his pole position, but
also wrecking the rest of his weekend, although he did not know at at the time.

What are the next steps, he was asked on Friday evening. “Mostly driving,” he said. “I
took it step by step but once you take the next step the risks are higher and this we will
only do in qualifying.”

Elsewhere, there is plenty of chatter - about the budget cap, about Daniel Ricciardo’s
future at McLaren, the shape of next year’s calendar, even the very future of this race.
More of those topics, perhaps, later. But for now it’s what happens on track that matters.

I asked in an earlier entry (12:58) whether you thought Sergio Perez was a good bet for a
front-row spot on the grid for tomorrow's race.

760 of you think 'yes', Checo could claim pole later on.
