“Jose Rizal” directed by Marilou Diaz-Abaya was a 1998 biographical film of the National Hero of the Philippines Dr. Jose P. Rizal. This movie is a great explanation of the Philippine tragic history. It focuses on the condition of our country and its social cancer during Spanish colonization. The novel of Rizal awakened the Filipinos to the abusive, corruption, and discrimination of Spaniards towards Filipinos. Revolution started through the malicious works Rizal that captures the attention of the Spanish government. This movie shows that being brave is not about taking the life of other people but instead using the power of mind through writing. Being brave in own way and patriotism are one of the characteristics of a Filipino that is being showed in the movie. The plot was full of twists and turns yet still not difficult to follow but it is so confusing to watch because there were too many flashbacks and you won’t even know if it is still in flashback or not. Overall, the movie is epic and the actors and actresses in the movie performed their role well. Though, there were instances that the characters speak in Spanish and it’s hard to appreciate or understand unless you’ll read the subtitles. This is by far the best Filipino movie that I have seen so far.
