Assignment
Instructions to students:
1. The assignment consists of 2 parts
2. The Part-A of the assignment has to be neatly word processed as per the prescribed format
and the printout must be taken on A4 sheet of paper. Each printed page must contain your
name and registration number.
3. The Part-B of the assignment is hand written
4. Submission Date: 21/05/2022
5. Submission after the due date is not permitted
6. Method of evaluation as per the submission and marking scheme
7. At the end, you are required to comment on –
a. Benefits you have derived by solving this assignment
8. IMPORTANT: It is essential that all the sources used in preparation of the assignment must
be suitably referenced in the text.

Part – A (6+4 = 10 Marks)
1.1 Consider the IVP:
𝑑𝑦
= −𝑦 + 𝑥√𝑦, 𝑦(2) = 2, 2 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 3.
𝑑𝑥
1.1.1 Determine the solutions of the given IVP at 𝑥 = 2.25, 2.5, 2.75, 3 by
a. Euler’s method
b. Modified Euler’s method
c. Runge-Kutta method of order 4
using MATLAB and record the output. Plot the graph of absolute error at each
step 𝑥 for each method and comment.
1.1.2 Determine the solution at 𝑥 = 3 using modified Euler’s method for step size
ℎ = 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.24, 0.5, 1.0 with the help of a MATLAB program.
Tabulate the solution at 𝑥 = 3 and plot a graph of relative error vs ℎ and
comment.

Part – B (5+5+5 = 15 Marks)

2.1 Determine the solution of the partial differential equation:
𝜕𝑧 𝜕𝑧
+ 𝑥(1 − 𝑦) = 𝑧.
𝜕𝑥 𝜕𝑦
2.2 A bar of length 𝑙 has its ends kept at temperature 0 and 𝑇0 respectively, where 𝑇0 is
a positive constant, until steady state conditions prevail. The two ends are then
suddenly insulated and kept so. Find the temperature distribution in the bar.
2.3 Evaluate the complex integral:
𝑧3 + 𝑧
∫ 𝑑𝑧
(2𝑧 + 1)3

where 𝐶 is the unit circle |𝑧| = 1.

Guidelines for Submission

Citation of the references in the text is necessary in all the parts.
 Restrict your report for Part-A to 4 pages only
 Divide your discussions clearly as per the sections mentioned above.
 Please note: Marks will be awarded only to the sections and sub-sections clearly indicated as per
the problem statement.
