explores mensuration problems in both the 2- and
3-
(Mathe dimensions. Lesson 5 lesson comes in two parts.
The first part focuses on Trigonometry, particularly
the applications of right triangles as well as oblique
triangles. The second part is all about analytic

matics
geometry, covering essential topics such as lines,
circles, and conic sections. Lesson 6 is all about
equations, particularly linear and quadratic
equations and their practical applications.

Lesson 4. Mensuration Problems

Highlights

A. What is mensuration? (5 POINTS)

- Mensuration in mathematics is defined to be a theory of measurements. It is part

of geometry and is particularly involved with the dimensions of measurements:
One-dimensional (length); two-dimensional (area); three-dimensional (volume).

B. Give 5 examples of plane figures. (5 POINTS)

4TH QUARTER, SY2020-2021 GED 102 WEEK 5

- A plane figure is a two-dimensional figure bounded by sides or curves. Some

examples of plane figures are triangles, quadrilaterals, circles, star polygons, and
elliptical sections.

C. Give 5 examples of solid figures. (5 POINTS)

- Unlike plane figures, solid figures are three-dimensional. Some examples of solids
are cubes, prisms, cylinders, pyramids, and cones.

D. Give the formula for the following: (5 POINTS)

1. Area of a regular polygon

3. Volume of a Pyramid

Lesson 5. Analytic Geometry and Trigonometry Problems

Highlights
4TH QUARTER, SY2020-2021 GED 102 WEEK 5

A. Write three (3) specific areas where Trigonometry can be applied. (6 POINTS)

• Nature - It can be applied to mountains and hills, also in waves of the

ocean.
• Video Games – It can be seen in the form of application of Physics in
games since you also need Trigonometry in computing for that.
• Building – Be it measuring the height of a building or constructing it,
Trigonometry can also be applied.

B. What is analytic geometry? (5 POINTS)

- Analytic geometry, also known as Coordinate Geometry or Cartesian
Geometry, is a study wherein algebraic symbolism and methods are used to
represent and solve problems in geometry using coordinate system.

C. What are the ways of writing the equations of a circle? (4 POINTS)

2 2
General Form 𝑥 +𝑦 + 𝐶𝑥 + 𝐷𝑦 + 𝐹 = 0
2 2 2
• Standard Form (𝑥 − ℎ )+ (𝑦 – 𝑘 )= 𝑟
2 2 2
• Center-Radius Form (𝑥 − ℎ )+( 𝑦 – 𝑘 )= 𝑟
2 2 2 2
• Unit Circle (𝑥 − ℎ )+ (𝑦 – 𝑘 )= 1 or 𝑥 +𝑦 =1

D. Define the three conic sections and write their equations. (15 POINTS)

• Ellipse
4TH QUARTER, SY2020-2021 GED 102 WEEK 5

- an ellipse is a plane curve surrounding two focal points, such that for all points on
the curve, the sum of the two distances to the focal points is a constant.
2
- Equation: x /a2 +y2 /b2 = 1

• Parabola

- A parabola is a curve where any point is at an equal distance from: a fixed point,
the focus, and a fixed straight line, the directrix.

Equation: (y - mx - b)2 / (m2 +1) = (x - h)2 + (y - k)2

• Hyperbola

- A hyperbola is the set of all points (x,y) in a plane such that the difference of the
distances between (x,y) and the foci is a positive constant.
2
Equation: x /a2 - y 2
/b2 = 1

Lesson 6. EQUATIONS

Highlights

A. What is an equation? (5 POINTS)

- An equation is a mathematical sentence which expresses equality of quantities.

Quantities is a mathematical expression which involves constants and variables. An

equation is a mathematical statement that the two expression have a same value.
4TH QUARTER, SY2020-2021 GED 102 WEEK 5

B. Explain the difference between a linear and a quadratic equation in terms of

degree and solution. (6 POINTS)

- The difference in linear and quadratic equation is that the equation is linear
equation (first degree) if the product and exponent of the variable is equal to 1.
While quadratic equation (second degree) if the highest exponent of the variable is
2 or possibly the sum of the exponent if there are products will equate to 2.

1. First Degree Equation: 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏 = 0

➢ Linear equation

➢ at most one solution

2
2. Second Degree Equation: 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 = 0

➢ Quadratic equation

➢ At most 2 solutions

C. Give a concise definition of the following:

1. Rate (3 POINTS)

- A rate is a comparison of two quantities. Rate in particular compare two different

quantities with different units. It is usually written in fraction form, (a/b). Unit rate

is formed if the number in the denominator is 1.

2. Ratio (3 POINTS)

- A rate is a comparison of two quantities that have the same unit. Ratio can be
written in a form of fraction (a/b), separated by colon (a:b), or by word “is to” (a is
to b). Ratio is usually written in simplest form.
4TH QUARTER, SY2020-2021 GED 102 WEEK 5

3. Proportion (3 POINTS)

- A proportion is basically an equation that states the equality of two rates or ratios.

So, if 𝑎/𝑏 and 𝑐/𝑑 are equal rates or rates, then 𝑎/𝑏 = 𝑐/𝑑 is a proportion It is

proportion as long as you set up the equality whether it is rate or ratio.
