Question 8 (2 marks)

The point 𝑃𝑃(−1, 4) lies on the function 𝑦𝑦 = 𝑓𝑓(𝑥𝑥). A series of transformations are
applied to the function to produce 𝑦𝑦 = 2𝑓𝑓 (𝑥𝑥 − 2) − 5.

Question 10 (4 marks)

The spread of a type of invasive weed into a country between 1955 and 2015
followed an exponential pattern of growth. This can be modelled by the equation
𝐴𝐴(𝑡𝑡) = 142𝑒𝑒 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 , where 𝐴𝐴 is the area covered in millions of square metres, 𝑡𝑡 is the
time in years after 1955 and 𝑘𝑘 is a positive constant. In 1985, there was 250 million
square metres of the weed.

i) Show the value of 𝑘𝑘 is 0.0189 to 4 decimal places. 2

ii) Assuming the rate of growth continued to use the same model beyond 2
2015, estimate the coverage of the weed by 2030 to the nearest million
square metre.
