LESSON 4

STRATEGIES FOR PROMOTING

LITERACY AND NUMERACY

The teacher knowledge and skills of his/her subject is very essential in order to help
students achieve their full potential in each subject. Content knowledge generally refers to
the facts, concepts, theories, and principles that are taught and learned in specific academic
courses. Pedagogy is the method, techniques and strategies of teaching, both as a subject
or theoretical concept The key to enhanced and holistic learning is by taking principles from
knowledge of the subject matter and the art of teaching, and combining them for a fully
immersive learning environment.
Literacy and numeracy are important because they form the basis of our learning.
They are required to acquire other skills, as well as for participation in everyday life. Literacy
and numeracy skills underpin workforce participation, productivity and the broader
economy, and can also impact on social and health outcomes.

COMPETENCY INDICATOR

At the end of the session, the practice teachers (PTs) will be able to:
● Discuss what is literacy and numeracy.
● Determine the different strategies applicable to promote students literacy and
numeracy.
● Reflect on which teaching and learning strategies are appropriate to develop
fundamental literacy and numeracy among learners.

TEACHER’S ROLE IN PROMOTING

LITERACY AND NUMERACY
Directions:
1. Read on the given article with comprehension.
2. Illustrate through the use of concept map the difference between literacy and
numeracy.
3. Briefly discuss your own understanding of literacy and numeracy.
4. Be ready to present your work to the class and answer the guide question that follow.

GUIDE QUESTION::
What do you think are the challenges in the promotion of literacy and numeracy among
students?
The challenges I foresee in the promotion of literacy and numeracy among the
students is the willingness to participate in class during synchronous sessions in virtual
learning. As a teacher and someone who have experienced virtual learning as a student, I
know it was quite difficult to adapt self in the abrupt change in the modality. Teachers
must come up with activities and strategies to continuously engage them in order to
develop these essential skills.
OBSERVATION FOR CLARIFICATION

Directions
● Watch the video on strategies to promote literacy and numeracy.
● Accomplish the checklist and answer the given guide questions (with observation
checklist)

GUIDE QUESTION::
Enumerate and discuss briefly the appropriate strategies used to develop literacy and
numeracy.
Initially, as I begin to answer this lesson within the module, I thought that it would be
difficult to integrate literacy and numeracy within the class. As I began to learn more
about it, I realized the importance of of incorporating this naturally within our lessons. For
example, checking up on students before classes began could be a way to develop our
students’ literacy and numeracy skills. According to the video I have watched, I realized
that the best strategy was to keep integrating it naturally. In this way, we could achieve
our target goal of decoding the idea they represent, enable them to create their own
ideas, understanding and utilising in their every day activities.
The strategies itself was not forced or categorized but formulated base on the
capabilities of the students. This reminds me of what our instructor always tell us, we
must know and understand our students to be able to know what is best for them.

REALIZATIONS THROUGH
REFLECTIONS

Revisit and analyze your output in the previous activities.

1. Connection: How does the knowledge of content and strategy to use affect students’
learning?
The knowledge of content and strategy affects the student’s learning in a way
that our execution of the learning matters in the students’ learning experience. It is
essential for us to carefully plan our process in order to be successful in developing
students’ skills.
2. Challenge: What are the factors that one should consider in selecting appropriate
strategy to promote students’ literacy and numeracy?
The factors that a teacher should should consider in selecting appropriate
strategies to promote students’ literacy and numeracy falls under the acronyms of
SHOES. This is something I have learned in the most recent workshop I have attended.
S - Strengths, we must know our students’ strengths and where are they good at. This is
effective especially during observations in classes. We can deduce what are the capabilities
of our students and consider them in plotting effective strategies.
REALIZATIONS THROUGH
REFLECTIONS

(CONTINUATION)

H - Hopes, what they aspire to be and what motivates them. In this way, we will be able to
capture their interests as well as enable them to engage during classes.

O - Obstacles, what may hinder us in successfully executing these strategies or are there
challenges on the end of our students that we must also consider, I am thinking of unstable
internet connectivity in online classes.

E - Everyday, what are their schedule looks like and how they spend their day, this is also
important for us to be able to be aware how our students live their tasks everyday, most of
them may have their classes in the morning and afternoon then spend some for leisure or
sleep afterwards.

S - Spaces, what are they like in the physical and digital space. This is something that we
must be aware of as we need to consider our students’ diverseness in order for our strategies
to be effective.

Apparently, this SHOES acronyms does not just stands as it is but as teachers, we must
indeed put ourselves in the shoes of our learners in order for us to come up with strategies
that are tailored and suits for them.

3. Concept: What are the concepts or theories that you learned from professional
educational courses that are essential/helpful in choosing the appropriate strategies to
develop literacy and numeracy of students?
One of the most notable theories that I have learned from my past professional
educational courses is Jerome Bruner’s Theory on Constructivism. I am impressed
with the concept of making the learners hold an active role in constructing learning
and ideas base on their past and current knowledge. This allows them to organize
their experience and make meaning from it, this concepts enables them to to go
beyond the input their teachers’ have given them.
I am very fond of this theory that I tend to apply it within my lesson planning
with the aim of enabling students to learn their lessons or the topic in their own
unique ways. As a teacher, I realized that it is our responsibility to come up with
appropriate strategies and activities to develop their skills within the classroom.
CONFIRMATION OF PASSION

CASE ANALYSIS
Study the following classroom scenarios (two case studies will be presented showing
strategy used to promote literacy and numeracy.

GUIDE QUESTION:
Does the teacher used appropriate strategy to develop literacy and numeracy among
students? Why or why not? Briefly explain your answer.
Me and my partner, Teacher Pinky are the teachers being observed during the 4th
Week. As discussed during our peer circle meeting, our colleagues commented that our
strategies are effective in developing literacies. They have specifically pointed out the
fact-checking and proper use of verbal and non-verbal communication enables us to
enhance the student’s skills. This is one of the objective of our approach, to be able to let the
students enjoy and find the topic interesting yet enable development within their skills
through the strategies implied unbeknownst to them.
In this note, I can say that our strategy used to promote literacy and numeracy are
appropriate enough for the students’ level and is quite interactive. Furthermore, I personally
think that it could still be enhanced in the coming lessons as the approach should be
leveled up that could foster critical thinking skills and challenge the students at the same
time.

HABITUATE TO PERPETUATE

WHAT WILL YOU DO NOW?

Based on what you learned, choose one or two strategies that you plan to use to develop
literacy or numeracy. Make a lesson plan and integrate the chosen strategy/ies.
