Email Copywriting Vs. Social Media

Copywriting: Which Is More Effective?
by BCLife

C
opywriting is presenting a copy to your message
recipients to prompt them to take action. The copy can
be in the form of email, infographics, text messages,
animation, etc., that will call the attention of your
message recipients. Lauren Perrodin discussed in her
article 9 types of copywriting
(https://www.brafton.com/blog/content-writing/types-of-copywriting/).
But only two common types are the focus of this article: email
copywriting and social media copywriting. The former uses channels
such as Yahoo and Gmail to send a copy, while the latter has platforms
such as Facebook and Twitter as communication channels.

Over the years, I have received copies through both types of

copywriting. There were times I responded through emails and other
times through social media copy. I have seen both good copies and bad
copies. From my assessment, their effectivity boils down to two aspects:

1. Personalization and Client Engagement

Email copywriting is one-on-one communication with its message
recipient and tends to be personalized, as in conversational and
customized. On the other hand, social media copywriting tends to be
generalized in their messages to their followers. Most social media
platforms are equipped with a facility for direct messages (DM), such as
Messenger for Facebook. In some cases, a button for lead generation in
social media will lead to one-on-one communication with the responding
follower.

2. Attention-grabbing
Email copywriting usually sends an all-text message. On the other hand,
a social media copy is designed to be more graphical or visual and with a
limited number of words. Some businesses can increase their revenues
through email copywriting, and other companies fail in their email
marketing but thrive in their social media marketing. The use of images
has advantages over text, but not in all cases.

An online survey was conducted in March 2018 and participated in by

564 marketers and creative professionals. One of the key findings in that

survey was that 65% of the organizations share visual content to engage
their audiences at least once a day. Dr. John Medina mentioned in his
Brain Rules that we remember 10% of the piece of information we heard
three days ago and 65% of it if it is visual.

On the other hand, Katie Thies, a conversion copywriter and a

consultant, articulated in her article, “In Favor of Long, Image-Light
Ecommerce Emails,” the better features of using text-based emails.

Why not make them work together?

Several social media copies that I ran into led me to sign up through
emails. The nurture emails did a lot of convincing to make me subscribe
or attend their courses. Some social media copies redirected my queries
to Facebook Messenger to enable one-on-one engagement.
Subsequently, I was persuaded to register through Google Forms with
the payment made through authorized channels.
There is no one approach to making a good copy. What works for one
does not guarantee that it will work for the other. One set of copies may
be appealing for one campaign but not for the other. In one case, email
copywriting and social media copywriting may be combined. In others,

only one type may suffice the requirements. The key is to continue
exploring and being innovative in revising copies as the need arises or
the situation requires. Just like the other aspects of life, copywriting is a
journey.
