Housing

------------------------------------------------------
1. What kind of housing do you live in?
To live in/ reside in/ to move in > < to move out/ relocate
An apartment/ a flat: inside a high-rise building = a skyscraper
A semi-detached house: 4 storeys
A dormitory/ to live in a dorm
A rent house
House = dwelling
I am living in an apartment…. located in/ situated in/ positioned in…the heart of
the city/ in the suburb/ inside a small alley….I have moved in for 5 years
My dwelling is relatively/ quite spacious (my room is airy > < stuffy) / My house is
a bit of cramped  enough for me to hang my hat
One of the drawbacks of my location is that it is too hot = sweltering/ scorching
hot in my neighborhood/ vicinity  Without air-conditioning, I can’t bear with
the boiling summer.

2. What’s the difference between where you are living now and where you have
lived in the past?
In the past = 10 years ago/ Back to 5 years/ When I was knee high as a
grasshopper
There were not many trees in my residence + not many traffic surrounded 
heavy traffic/ gridlock/ lengthy delays was a rarity
Today/ Currently, along with the modernization/ urban sprawl (= urban
development), more and more vehicles are/have been witnessed on the road  a
contributing factor to serious/ massive traffic congestion/ traffic jam. Also, the
increased volume of traffic means more exhaust fumes are released/ discharged
 contaminate the atmosphere. However, on the positive side/ outlook, I have
seen more green space and greenery established in my residence  partly
alleviate air pollution.
3. What part of your home do you like the most?
My room is my go-to choice  This is because/ can be attributed to the fact 
my private corner  instill me a sense of comfort and coziness  do whatever I
want to relax = unwind/ chill out/ blow off some steam/ recharge my battery.

Balcony: a place for me to work out on a regular basis  I attempt to keep a

certain level of physical activity every day to stay away from health issues like
obesity/ overweight. Plus/ also, I have planted some flowers such as roses as I am
a fan of nature --> looking at these small things can really make my day
Kitchen/ living room: fully equipped/ furnished  interior design follow a
modern style/ classic style  packed with antiques (= old furniture)/ smart
appliances
For family gatherings/ reunion  spend our leisure time/ spare time to catch up
with each other. / have small talks together

The school has acquired a reputation for/ has been renowned for/ been
synonymous with …
Facilities: top-notch/ cutting-edge/ the state-of-the-art (classrooms are fully
equipped with projects and computers)
Teachers: qualified + approachable
Classmates: nice + try to lend me a hand/ help me out when I face difficulties  I
never fall behind with my peers.

Do you like your major?

Like = I have a soft spot for/ I am cut out for sth/ to be really into/ a fan of/
enthusiastic about/ fanatical about  my major is …
Studying ….allows me to broaden my horizon in terms of/ have a better
understanding of/ have a deeper insight into …
Studying…. lay a solid foundation for …(studying biology could lay a solid
foundation for me to become a doctor later in life)
…helps me to sharpen ….. skills

Do you think your country has an effective education system?

For the most part, I have a mixed feeling about it

On the one hand  students could reap enormous benefits from the national
education  they could gain access to in-depth theoretical knowledge  lay a
solid foundation for …/ open up possibilities for students to….
Facilities: have been significantly improved over the time  distance learning has
been introduced as an alternative to traditional classes
On the other hand, the downside is that the system is too academic-oriented/
goal-oriented  many lessons are packed with definitions and formula but they
lack experiments or hands-on experience  students find these lessons are
boring = mundane/ repetitive/ mind-numbing
