Crazy Sentences
Here is a productive activity to help students practice forming sentences with adjectives and
nouns, using appropriate word order.

Before class, make one copy of the adjective and noun cards and cut as indicated, keeping
each set separate.

Procedure

Divide the class into two to four teams, depending on the size of your class.

Give each team one set of adjective cards and one set of noun cards. Ask them to shuffle
the two sets and place them face down in separate piles on the desk.

Tell the students that they are going to work together to form sentences using adjectives and
nouns. Explain that they will have three minutes to make one sentence containing an
adjective and noun.

Inform them that the sentences they create don’t have to be true (the crazier the better) and
they can be positive or negative and in any tense. Each sentence they write must also be
different.

Tell them they will be awarded points for grammar and sentence length.

When you say ‘go’, each team turns over one adjective and one noun card.

They then have three minutes to make a sentence and write it on the board.

When the time is up, check each team’s sentence and award one point for correct grammar
and one point for every word in the sentence if the grammar is correct. This will encourage
the students to write long sentences.

Also, if a sentence is grammatically incorrect, give teams an extra point for successfully
correcting the other team’s sentence.

Teams then discard the adjective and noun and turn over two new cards.

Repeat this process until all the cards have been used up.

The team with the highest number of points at the end is the winner.
