ABSTRACT
Generally the usage of vehicle tracking system has been increased rapidly. The major concern of the
proposed system is identifying the vehicle theft by implementing anti-system. Car accidents are taken into
consideration certainly one of the most detrimental phenomena. Though there are numerous different
reasons behind car accidents, most injuries occur due to driver’s unawareness and uncontrolled
speed. Also, there appears to be a trouble accomplishing the spot of accident on time due to loss of
awareness. So smart vehicle using an Internet of Things (IoT) technology is the solution to reduce
the number of accidents and also to prevent theft. This paper presents a smart system design to detect
the accident immediately. This system always monitors the gap between the vehicles using ultrasonic
sensor. The proposed design is cognizant with GPS/GPRS and GSM that automatically send an alert
message to family members and nearest rescue team. The GPS/GPRS system continuously keeps the
track of vehicle location and can be used during an accident and theft.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

One of the most usable technologies in this trending world is IoT. IoT
describes about the embedded devices which are interlinked with the internet.
IoT Internet of Things encompasses devices like sensors, actuators, motors etc.
Nowadays the major concern of the people is securing the valuable objects like
vehicles. Security is enhanced by using GPS. The proposed system is used as an
anti-theft system in transport systems, public vehicles. In this automobile world,
Most of the people depend on vehicles and / or means of transportation system
to commute. This automobile usage has increased the traffic and chances of
accidents. As per US publisher Ward’s estimation in 2010, there were 1.015
billion motor vehicles are used by people throughout the globe. This figure
include the number of cars, trucks (light, medium and heavy duty), but off-road
vehicles or heavy construction equipment is not included. The comparison
between 1950 and 1970, the vehicle population got double roughly in every 10
years. . Smart Tracker system combines Internet technology, GPS and terrestrial
networks such as GSM/GPRS. The device fitted in the vehicle has a built in
GPS receiver determines the vehicle location, travelling speed, direction etc.
The device sends the data via GSM/GPRS wireless network to the Vehicle
Tracking Application.

According to Global status report on road safety 2018 by WHO the number of
deaths on roads is unacceptably high, with an estimated 1.35 million people
dying every year. It additionally represents the several losses of lives; occur
because of lack of instant medical support. Despite of the fact, the new
innovation and technology has progressed so much, still the road fatalities
continue to increase worldwide. In order to improve the road safety, vast
development in the wireless technology had introduced a new type of the
network such as Vehicular Ad-hoc NET work which provides the inter vehicle

communication. The VANET based Intelligent Transportation systems used to

gather the information from neighbour vehicle and predict the accident by
observing the traffic conditions. The survey on the (IoT) based road accident
system proposed IR sensors, laser section and RFID Tag in vehicles. The Smart
Vehicle Monitoring and Tracking System (SVMTS) The proposed system, uses
IOT some sensors in order to detect the distance between the vehicle to prevent
the collision and detect the accident relatively in less time that sends an alert to
rescue team and family members. In the case of theft, the owner will be able to
track the location of the vehicle using GPS via Mobile app. This application
helps and gives the best result to overcome the lack of emergency facilities. This
system is useful for continuous monitoring of the vehicle and to describe the
status of the vehicle on request.

ARCHITECTURE
A) Vehicle Theft Detection

Fig 1.1: Block diagram of Vehicle Theft detection

 Ultrasonic sensor: Here ultrasonic sensor is used, the reason behind
choosing ultrasonic sensor its operation is not affected by sunlight, it has
high accuracy rate and stable readings, It is used to detect an obstacle that
is near to the vehicle. The sensor used in this prototype model ranges
from 2cm-400cm.Ultrasonic sensor mainly comprises of four pins VCC,
GND, Echo, Trigger, VCC supply for ultrasonic sensor is usually 5V,
GND pin is connected to the ground of the Node MCU, The trig and echo
pins are connected to the digital i/o pins on the Arduino board. To
generate the ultrasound, you need to set the trig on a high state and the
generated sound will be received by the echo pin.
 Gas Sensor: Here mq3 gas sensor is used, in particular in using mq3
sensor is its conductivity increase as the concentration of alcohol
increases, it has high sensitivity and fast response rate. Gas sensor mainly
comprises of four pins, where three pins are used A0, GND, VCC, A0 is
analog pin that is connected to analog pin of Node MCU, GND is
connected to GND, and VCC supply is 3.3v.

 IR Sensor: IR sensor mainly consists of three pins VCC, GND, Digital

pin The power supply for IR sensor is 3.3v and the GND pin of a sensor
is connected to GND pin of Node MCU, the digital pin of IR sensor to
digital pin of Node MCU
 Temperature sensor: DHT11 Sensor is used to check the engine
temperature .DHT11 sensor consists of three pins, power supply of dht11
is 3.3v, and GND pin is connected to GND pin of Node MCU, Digital pin
of dht11 sensor is connected to Digital pin of Node MCU.
 Node MCU: The Node Micro Controller Unit (Node MCU) is used as a
gateway. It has inbuilt Wi-Fi module which is used to send the sensor
data to cloud for storage and analysis. The main reason behind selecting
Node MCU is that the sensors used in our project uses only digital pins
and one analog pin are required. Also, it consumes less power (3.3v) and
is of low cost when compared to other micro controllers /processors like
Arduino and Raspberry pi. Node MCU is connected to ultrasonic sensors,
gas sensor, temperature sensor, IR sensor. All the values are connected
and send to Cloud.
 GPS Module: Node MCU is ESP8266 based advancement board. It
highlights ESP-12E as its handling center. It is a 32bit MCU. It has 14
GPIO pins, single channel 10 bit coordinated ADC. It bolsters UART,
I2C, and SPI correspondence. It is 3.3V perfect event that you are new to

plays the voice accouchement by using the voice playback system. In case, the
accident is occurred the video are taken by the webcam, Raspberry-pi sent the
video to the server. A video call will be connected nearest police station and
relations. This system sends the information about the accident to the nearest
hospitals. If any mechanical problem is occurred during the travel time it will be
sent to the raspberry pi.
Raspberry-pi announced this information to the driver by using the voice play
back system. Car door was partially locked means this information is send to the
raspberry pi and also any gas leakage is detects in this system this is sent to the
raspberry pi. Raspberry-pi will announce this to the driver via voice signal. If
any natural calamity or the road is blocked by some barrier, the information is
will be announced to the user in predefined manner, when they set the starting
point and destination point. Raspberry-pi plays the voice to the driver
corresponding to the barrier detected. Once driver update his vehicle details as
stop then he only able to starts this vehicle. If any criminal activities occurred to
the vehicle that information is send to the raspberry pi. Raspberry-pi sends this
information to the driver and nearest police station by using GPS tracking
system. The complete information can be viewed on the web page using internet

RESULT AND DISCUSSION
 In order to avoid the accident the ultrasonic sensor alerts the driver by
using Red, Blue LED and buzzer. When there is no obstacles and vehicles
in the range of ultrasonic sensor then no warning signal will generate.
 When there is any obstacle or another vehicle in the range of ultrasonic
sensor, it sends the signal to controller and controller generates the
warning signal to alert the driver in the form of buzzer and LED
indication.
 In case if an accident occur due to the carelessness of driver then the
active sensor (vibration sensor) send this alteration message to controller,
by using GSM and GPS module an emergency alert is send to the
predefined number with the location.
