Abstract and Figures

Thermal properties of crops are very important in the design of drying, processing and
storage equipment. The availability of such relevant information on cashew nutwill aid in Discover the world's research
the design and manufacture of equipment for postharvest operations. The thermal
20+ million
conductivity, specific heat capacity and thermal diffusivity of cashew kernel were evaluated
members
as a function of moisture content. Specific heat was measured by the method of mixtures
while the thermal conductivity was measured by the line heat source probe method. 135+ million
Thermal diffusivity was calculated from the experimental results obtained from specific publications
heat, thermal conductivity and bulk density. The bulk density for nut and kernel decreased 700k+ research
from 625.62 to 592.42kg/m3 and 559.60 to 505.06kg/m3 respectively with increasing Join for free

moisture content from 5.0% to 9.0% w.b. Specific heat increased linearly from 1586
to1756J/kgºC with increasing moisutre content. The thermal conductivity ranged from
0.2103 to 0.2296W/mK and thermal diffusivity varied from 2.369×10-7 to 2.588×10-7m2/s.
Specific heat, thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity were found to increase linearly
with increasing moisture content from 5.0 to 9.0% w.b. Keywords: cashew, thermal
conductivity, thermal diffusivity, moisture content, specific heat.

... Therefore, there is a need to establish the thermal properties of the food optimum to develop the thermal processes
and equipment needed for storage, drying, heating, and cooling. Bart-Plange, Addo and Piegu, (2012) reported that the
knowledge of the thermal properties of food and agricultural products is essential for equipment design and prediction
of heat transfer operations. Oriola, Oke, Hussein and Adebesin, (2016) also stated that the thermal properties of food
and agricultural materials are necessary knowledge needed for the effecttive design of food processing equipment such
as heat exchangers and other equipment which require pumping of the products. ...
... The thermal properties of various foods and agricultural products have been studied by many researchers such as
Chakraborty and Johnson (1999) for Tobaco, Chandrasekar and Viswanathan (1999) for coffee, Aviara, Haque and
Ogunjimi (2008) for guna seeds and Tansakul and Lumyong (2008) for straw mushroom. Also, moisture and
temperature dependency of thermal properties of some food crops have been studied by other researchers such Aviara
and Haque (2001) for shea nut kernel, Bart-Plange et al. (2012) for cashew kernel, Gharibzahedi, Ghahderijani and
Lajevardi (2013) for red lentil seed, Isa, Oladele and Akinlade (2014) for egusi melon and Oriola et al. (2016) for cooked
locust bean seeds. Oriola, Hussein, Oke and Ajetunmobi (2020) evaluated the physical and moisture dependent thermal
properties of Jack bean seeds. ...
... A non-linear relationship of Cp with moisture contents was also been reported by Oriola (2014) for cassava root and
Oriola et al. (2016) for cooked locust bean seed. However, other studies have reported a linear relationship such as Hsu,
Mannapperuma and Singh (1991) for pistachios, Bart-Plange et al. (2012) for cashew kernel, Chandrasekar and
Viswanathan (1999) for coffee beans, and Abioye et al. (2016) for Bambara groundnut. This shows that the food
materials to be processed determine the type of heat processing it needs to be subjected to (Oriola et al., 2020). ...

... "Tannin" is the phenolic compound responsible for this astringency. Even though this fruit has a huge potential to
produce various value-added products like ready to serve (RTS) beverages, jam, distilled product (wine), and marmalade,
its astringency is still a major technological challenge that hinders the exploitation of its valuable nutrients (Campos et
al., 2002; Das & Arora, 2017). Nowadays, people are very much concern about their health and hence this fruit has
started gaining popularity from people all around the world due to its nutritious values and health benefits. ...
... Similar results of the specific heat, thermal conductivity, and diffusivity of some tropical fruits of same genus such as
mango and cashew apple found in Nigeria were reported by Ikegwu and Ekwu (2009). Bart-Plange, Addo, Kumi, and
Piegu (2012) determined the thermal properties of cashew apple kernel (specific heat-1.78 kJ/kg C; ...

... A number of researchers determined the thermal properties of several grains, seeds and kernels; Jiříčková et al.
(2006) for soybean, Aviara et al. (2008) for guna seed, Ato et al. (2012) for cashew kernel, Kara et al. (2011) for
safflower seeds, Sadeghi (2012) for feed pellets, Bamgboye and Adejumo (2010) for roselle seeds. The method of
mixture was used in determining specific heat capacity; thermal conductivity was determined using steady state and
transient heat flow methods while thermal diffusivity was mostly determined from experimental values of bulk density
and thermal conductivity of bio-materials. ...
... The SH-1 Dual-Needle sensor was properly inserted into the in the mass of seed sample due to its higher moisture
content level. A similar trend was observed for the specific heat capacity of borage seeds (Yang et al. 2002), guna seeds
and kernels (Aviara et al. 2008), black pepper seeds (Murlidahar, Goswami 2011), cashew kernels (Ato et al. 2012) ,
black sunflower seeds (Hosain et al. 2012) and coriander seeds (Vijay 2013). The change in the specific heat capacity
of seed and kernel of soursop with moisture content is presented in Fig. 3a; it depicts that the specific heat capacity of
both seeds and kernels increased linearly with increasing moisture content from 8.0-32. ...

... The density values for all the temperatures studied ranged between 0.492 and 0.680 g/cm 3 . The values obtained in
this study are similar to those reported (0.5.5 -0.625 g/cm 3 ) for cashew nut and kernel [27] but higher than those
reported (0.453-0.472 g/cm 3 ) for borage seeds [25]. Differences may be due to the moisture content range (1.2 -30.3%
w.b) and the type of oilseed explored. ...
... Thermal diffusivity values obtained in this study were higher than those (0.09 -0.13 *10 -5 m 2 s -1 ) reported for
ground melon [16], I. gabonensis flour (5.52 -9.53 *10 -6 m 2 /s) [7] and for cashew kernel (2.369 -2.588 *10 -7 m 2 /s)
reported by [27] . Differences in the results may be due to the differences in the food material, their forms (ground or
whole), moisture content range and other parameters necessary for calculating the thermal diffusivity (‫ ݀݊ܽ‫ܥ‬,݇ ,ߙ ,ߩ‬). ...

... In Asia and other parts of the world, large quantities of cereal grains are produced for local consumption and export.
Most of them contain a large quantity of initial moisture content and are therefore highly susceptible to rapid quality
degradation, even to the extent of spoilage, if not kept in thermally controlled storage facilities [1] . Cashew
(Anacardium occidentale L.) kernel is a highly commercial value crop among these cereal grains. ...

September 2015 · Transactions of the ASABE (American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers)
Sreenivasula Boreddy · Jeyamkondan Subbiah

Knowledge of the physical and thermal properties of egg white powder (EWP) is needed for bulk handling and heat transfer modeling.
The densities (bulk, tap, and true) of EWP at four different moisture content levels were determined. The densities of EWP significantly
decreased with an increase in moisture content. The determined Hausner ratio classified the EWP as very poor flowing powder. The ...
