In the last two weeks I talked about the first step to

starting and running a successful business and we
focused on picking an industry and narrowing it
down to a specific niche, check out my Instagram
here, to read all about it.

So, after you have found your industry, what should

you do? drumroll please, study your target market!.
However, it is not as easy as the textbooks say it is.
To be able to start you need to know what a target
audience is in the first place therefore in this
document you will find some of the few things I did
before opening my store and I hope you will find
them helpful too

LETS DIVE IN!

WHAT IS A TARGET
AUDIENCE?

Your target audience is a specific group of consumers

who are most likely to buy your product or service.
They can be grouped into different segments such as
demographic, geographic, benefit etc. The following
are some methods you can use to find your target
audience

CONTINUED
1. Study other well known brands in your
industry

Study products and services that are similar to

what you are offering and look at the brands that
have positioned themselves well on the market
and why the audience buys from them. For
example, if you want to start an affordable makeup
brand then look at drugstore brands such as
Essence which is well known for offering good
quality affordable makeup especially for
beginners..

2. Conduct
qualitative
surveys.

Ask your audience questions that can help you

better improve your product or service to see
how they view your brand. For example, if you
own a skincare brand, you could ask your target
audience what they think about your packaging
and how it makes them feel. Do the glass
bottles with the nude designs make them feel
important and expensive or does the glass make
the product heavy?

3. DO NOT
assume
anything about
your audience

I repeat, DO NOT ASSUME ANYTHING

ABOUT YOUR AUDIENCE. I am telling you
from experience, I did that a couple of times
and it would always cost me money.
Interact with your audience if you can and
ask questions that can help you better
improve your brand, product, or service. For
example, if you notice an increased demand
for a popular shirt that you sell, don't
assume it is the material that you used to
make it when it could be the weather.

4. Learn from others

Look for secondhand information by looking at other online

cases that are available and learning from people such as
your mentors in your industry. NB: MAKE SURE THE
INFORMATION IS RECENT AND RELEVEANT TO YOUR
GOALS

Don’t be afraid to ask for help as well as this could help you
network with your peers and other business owners you
could do collabs with

5. Engage in social conversations

with your audience.

Interact with your target audience on blogs, social

platforms and attend social events to better
understand why your audience interacts with
your competitors or with certain popular
influencers.

6. Be willing to grow and learn new
things about your audience

Have you ever been in a situation

where you think you have
understood what your audience is
looking for then boom, their
preferences change again, don’t
worry, this happens all the time. I
remember how frustrated I was
whenever I thought I knew what
my customers were looking for and
then 2 weeks later I found myself
going back to my data to see what
had changed AGAIN!.
What does this mean?
Consumer trends and This means that you should always have
preferences might change up-to-date information about industry
trends to stay ahead of your customers
more often than you think
and competitors. For example, if you
and the best way to sell cameras and you notice that there
ensure that you don't get has been a growing trend of millennials
frustrated is to always and generation z consumers starting
YouTube channels, then your marketing
stay on top of your game
efforts might yield the best results if you
create ads that appeal to them.
