➔ Second amendment guarantees law abiding citizens the right to keep and bear arms
➔ Definition - Gun control is an umbrella term that refers to laws and ordinances that
restrict how law-abiding citizens can buy, own, or use firearms. These vary at the
federal, state, and local levels
◆ This means there are different restrictions depending on where you live
● Example - in some towns people who have a concealed carry license
aren’t allowed to carry firearms in some public parks. In Chicago it is
unlawful to carry most semi-automatic firearms
➔ Federal gun control legislation like the Gun control act of 1968
(https://www.atf.gov/rules-and-regulations/gun-control-act)and the Brady Handgun
Prevention Act of 1993(https://www.atf.gov/rules-and-regulations/brady-law) made it
more difficult nationwide to obtain firearms
➔ It has been seen that gun control laws don’t work all that effectively
◆ Reason 1- criminals by definition don’t follow the law. Gun control has only
affected law abiding people who go through the legal process to own a firearm
● In 2016 the Obama administration by the Bureau of Justice Statistics
conducted a study to examine how prison inmates obtained the firearms
they used while committing their crime. Only about 10% obtained their
firearms legally
○ Other ways firearms were obtained- illegal underground sales,
bought, borrowed, or traded from friends and family, gifts, another
individual purchased the gun for them, theft, from their victims, or
from the scene of a crime
◆ Reason 2 - Cities with the strictest gun laws have the highest crime rates
● Chicago saw a 50% increase in homicide cases in 2020 (all gun related)
● New York City homicides increased by 41% in 2020 and shootings
increased by 95%

➔ Suicide is the central problem of gun violence in America
◆ A report in the Harvard Political Review said that in 2019 nearly ⅔ of gun deaths
were suicides
● Gun control most likely wouldn’t reduce suicides because any firearm
would take someone’s life
● “Attempting to stop suicide by imposing gun control is like trying to
stop drunk driving by banning cars: it’s a completely implausible
“solution” that elides the actual problem at hand.”
➔ Partner and familial violence
◆ A homocide victim is 5x more likely to have been killed by a family member
rather than a gun
◆ A woman’s chance of death increases by 500% if a gun is present during a
domestic dispute
➔ Other
◆ Per 2019 FBI data only 2.6% of homocides are carried out using a rifle. Clubs and
bare fists are used to kill people more than firearms

➔ People need to be educated about gun safety
◆ 95% of all US gun owners feel children should learn about gun safety
● Gun safety and mental health need to be addressed to prevent killings
● “children taught about firearms and their legitimate uses by family
members have much lower rates of delinquency than children in
households without guns” and “children introduced to guns
associate them with freedom, security, and recreation—not
violence.” - Kyle wintersteen, managing editor of guns and ammo
➔ Guns make people feel safer
◆ 79% men and 80% women said they feel safer owning a gun
◆ 64% of people with a gun in the home feel safer
