sāyaṃ saṃdhyāvaṃdanaṃ
1. śarīra śuddhi
apavitraḥ pavitro vā sarvāvasthāṃ gato'pi vā । yaḥ smaret puṃḍarīkākṣaṃ sa
bāhyābhyantaraśśuciḥ ॥
3. bhūtoccāṭana
(water is taken in the right hand, smelt and thrown back on the left side)
uttiṣṭantu bhūtapiśācāḥ ye te bhūmibhārakāḥ ।
eteṣāmavirodhena brahmakarma samārabhe ॥
prāṇāyāmamu
oṃ bhūḥ । oṃ bhuvaḥ । ogṃ suvaḥ। oṃ mahaḥ। oṃ janaḥ । oṃ tapaḥ।
ogṃ satyaṃ । oṃ tatsa viturvakeṇyaṃ bhargodevasya dhīmahi ।
dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt । omāpo jyotīrasoऽmṛtaṃ brahma bhūrbhuvassuvarom ॥
6. maṃtrācamanamu
7. punarmārjanamu
(after taking water in the Uddharini, sprinkle water on self wherever the mark '।' appears)
(sprinkle water on self while sprinkling water on the head wherever the symbol "॥" appears)
hiraṇyavarṇā śśucayaḥ pāvakā yāsu jātaḥ kaśyapo yāsvindraḥ ।
agniṃ yā garbhaṃ dadhire virūpā stā na āpaśśagg syonā bhavantu ॥
yāsāg0 rājā varuṇo yāti madhye satyā nṛte avapaśyan janānām ।
madhu ścyuta śśucayo yāḥ pāvakāstāna āpaśśagg syonā bhavantu ॥
yāsāṃ devā divi kṛṇvanti bhakṣaṃ yā antarikṣe bahudhā bhavanti ।
yāḥ pṛthivīṃ payasondanti śukrāstāna āpaśśagg syonā bhavantu ॥
śivena mā cakṣuṣā paśya tā pa śśivayā tanu vopaspṛśata tvacaṃ me ।
sarvāgṃ agnīgṃ rapsuṣado huvevo mayi varco bala mojo nidhatta ॥
8. pāpa puruṣa vimocanamu
(take water in the right hand, exhale air from the left nostril into the water and throw the water
away into the left side without looking behind)
laghu saṃkalpamu
9. arghya pradānamu
(This is to be performed facing West)
If Sandhyāvandanam is performed in time, the following is the sequence to be followed for arghya
pradānam. Take water in the hands made in the form of a cup by joining both the palms, and then
offer the water thrice by turning towards the Sun, while reciting the following Mantra,)
mukhyakālātikramaṇa prāyaścittārghyamu
If one is not able to perform Sandhyāvandam in time for whatever reason, i.e if it is past
Sandhyāvandanam time, a prāyaścittārghyam is offered once before pradhānārghyam is offered.
It may be noted that only after this prāyaścittārghyam, pradhānārghyam is to be offered.
Take water in the cup formed by joining both the palms, turn towards the West, and saying the
mantra “mukhyakālātikramaṇa doṣa parihārārthaṃ prāyaścittārghya pūrvaka prātaḥ
saṃdhyārghya pradānaṃ kariṣye”, and followed by the mantra given below, leave the water in
the plate once.
smṛtyācamanamu
trirācāmet oṃ svāhā... oṃsvāhā... oṃ svāhā
(sip water three times while saying the above “mantras” and then wash hands in the plate)
dviḥ parimṛjya (with the lower portion of the thumb scan the upper lip from right to left
and the lower lip from left to right)
sakṛdupaspṛśya (index finger and middle fingers on the lips)
yatsavyaṃ pāṇiṃ (water from left hand to right hand and vice versa)
pādau (as if sprinkling water on feet)
prokṣati śiraḥ (as if sprinkling water on head)
cakṣuṣī (touch left eye with thumb and ring fingers first and then the left eye)
nāsike (with thumb and index fingers touch right and left nostrils)
śrotre (with thumb and little finger, touch right and left ears)
hṛdayamālabhya (place thumb, middle and ring fingers on the heart)
athaḥ apaupaspṛśet (wipe both the hands then)
11.tarpaṇamu
(Tarpanam should be offered sitting. Taking water in the right hand and saying “tarpayāmi,
tarpaṇaṃ should be offered)
laghu saṃkalpamu
āyātu varadā devī akṣaraṃ brahma sammitam ॥ gāyatrīṃ chaṃdasāṃ mā tedaṃ brahma
juṣasvame! yadahnāt kurute pāpaṃ tadahnāt prati mucyate । yadrātriyāt kurute pāpaṃ
tadrātriyāt pratimucyate । sarvavarṇe mahādevi saṃdhyā vidye sarasvati ॥ ojoऽsi sahoऽsi
balamasi bhrājoऽsi devānāṃ dhāmanāmāsi viśvamasi viśvāyuḥ sarvamasi sarvāyurabhibhūrom ॥

(reciting the following Mantras, sip water once after each Mantra)

oṃ āpohiṣṭhā mayobhuvaḥ (right palm on the left one)
tāna ūrje dadhātana (left palm on the right one)
maheraṇāya cakṣase (run hand on upper lip from right to left)
yova śśivatamo rasaḥ (run hand on lower lip from left to right)
tasya bhājayateha naḥ (left palm on right palm)
uśatī riva mātaraḥ (right palm on left palm)
tasmā araṅga māma vaḥ (as if sprinkling water on feet)
yasyakṣayāya jinvatha (as if sprinkling water on head)
āpojanayathā ca naḥ (as if sprinkling water on head)
oṃ bhūḥ (touch the chin)
oṃ bhuvaḥ (touch right nostril with thumb and index fingers)
o(gṃ) suvaḥ (touch left nostril with thumb and index fingers)
oṃ mahaḥ (touch right eye with thumb and ring fingers)
oṃ janaḥ (touch left eye with thumb and ring fingers)
oṃ tapaḥ (touch right ear with thumb and little finger)
o(gṃ) satyam (touch left ear with thumb and little fingers)
oṃ tatsa viturvareṇyam (touch the navel)
oṃ bhargo devasya dhīmahi (touch the heart)
oṃ dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt (touch the head)

13. Gāyatrījapa saṃkalpamu

sāyaṃ saṃdhyāṃga gāyatrī mahā maṃtra japaṃ kariṣye ॥ (water to be offered in the plate)

(the Gayatri Mantra given below may be recited preferably108 times; otherwise as per ones
ability and convenience)
oṃ bhūrbhuvassuvaḥ । tatsa viturva reṇyaṃ bhargo devasya dhīmahi । dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt

anena mayākṛta sāyaṃ saṃdhyāvaṃdana madhye maṃtra taṃtra, svara varṇa, kriyā lopa
doṣa prāyaścityārthaṃ nārāyaṇa aṣṭākṣarī mahā maṃtra japaṃ kariṣye (water is offered)
oṃ namo nārāyaṇāya (to be recited eleven times)
ogṃ svāhā.... ogṃ svāhā.... ogṃ svāhā....
(water to be sipped once after each mantra thus making a total of three and water is then offered in the
plate)
