Passage 1 (15 marks)
Deaf Tourist Stabbed by Mysterious Motorbiker

[1]An incident resulted in an injury on Silver Coast last night. At 2 a.m., a middle-aged deaf
Korean tourist was lying in the road. He had had his palms stabbed by a motorbike rider while
on his way back to his hostel. 37-year-old Kim cannot hear or speak so could not call the
police directly, and was unable to send an SMS to the nearest emergency control centre
5 because of his injured palms. Emergency responders found Kim two hours later suffering
from severe bleeding. The emergency responders were criticized for not being responsive
enough and not having enough support for deaf people. Joseph Lee, the head of the Police
Department, promised to improve their emergency reporting system.

[2]Kim stated that he was walking back to his tourist accommodation when he saw the rider
10 of the motorbike dashing along the road. He waved at the rider and signed to him, thinking
that he might give him a ride. But when the rider saw the sign language, he stopped his
motorbike, got off and quickly stabbed Kim’s palms with a cutter.

[3]‘I think my hand gestures offended him,’ the police quoted what Kim wrote using a pencil
in his mouth when they questioned him. Kim said that he would not recognize the rider again
15 as his face was covered by his helmet and he was well bundled up in his motorbike outfit.

[4]Joseph Lee admitted that they did not have enough support available for deaf people. ‘We
want to include more ways to seek help in addition to the SMS reporting system, but we don’t
have the right technology yet,’ said Lee. ‘We guarantee that we will have completed an
improvement proposal by the end of this year.’

20 [5]Silver Coast is a popular tourist hotspot on Bacon Island, and is the most spectacular of all
the sea coasts surrounding it. Bacon Island is full of rough terrain and is famous for its varied
landscapes. Most shops and hostels were built on the plains by the coasts, making these areas
populous at weekends. Around 30 000 tourists visit the island per year and around 200 of
them are deaf.
Answer the following questions in the answer sheet. Each question carries 1 mark unless otherwise
stated. For questions in * , answer in complete sentences.

2. What criticisms were made against the emergency responders? (2 marks)

4. Why did Kim have to answer police questions by writing with a pencil in his mouth? (2 marks)

A quiet

Passage 2 (13 marks)
Fusion food

[1]Chocolate pizzas? Noodle sandwiches? Sushi burritos? No, these aren’t dishes made by
accident or created in Dr Frankenstein’s lab. In recent years, foodies have embraced a new
food trend: fusion food. Fusion means cooking with a mixture of different food cultures,
taking the best ingredients from each and serving up something unique for diners.

5 [2]One new eatery on Hong Kong’s fusion scene is Mexican Seoul, which has recently
opened in Sai Ying Pun. Local chef Cyrus Lee opened up this new joint to serve up Mexican
food with a Korean twist. ‘I lived in LA for five years – that city is a foodie paradise,’ Lee
told me. ‘They love Mexican food but there is a big Korean population too, so the two styles
have come together to create some really tasty dishes. Think peppery tacos flavoured with
spicy kimchi, or crisp nachos with Korean fried chicken. Every bite gives customers the
10 delicate flavours of East and West. It’s a mouth-watering blend.’

[3]The stand-out dish for me was the bulgogi quesadillas: moist, chewy beef sandwiched
between soft floury tortillas, with lots of oozing melted cheese added. The food was well
seasoned and filling, without being too heavy. The servings were very generous and perfect
for sharing. Mexican Seoul has a laid-back vibe and great décor, with an eye-popping mix of
15 Mexican and Korean art on the walls. I would perhaps advise readers to avoid the desserts –
the flan with red bean paste was too sugary even for my sweet tooth. All in all, I would give
Mexican Seoul a very positive review and recommend it to any adventurous eaters who have
tried both cuisines before and are looking to make a new discovery.

Passage 3 (14 marks)

Football Stars
[1] A 2006 survey by FIFA (football’s international organisers) found that around 265 million
people play football regularly. That’s 4% of the world’s population! This makes it even more
incredible that the competition for the title of ‘world’s best player’ has been taking place
between just two sporting superstars for the last few years. In this article we are going to ask
who is the best footballer in the world today: Lionel Messi, of Argentina, or Cristiano
Ronaldo, of Portugal?
Lionel Messi
[2] Lionel Andrés Messi was born on 24 June 1987. His club team is Barcelona and he is
captain of Argentina’s national side. He won the FIFA Ballon d’Or award (for the best
performing player) in 2010 and 2011.

[3] So why do so many journalists and fans think Messi is the greatest player on the planet?
Messi is short for a footballer at five feet, seven inches tall, but has amazing lower body
strength. He has great balance and is able to run from one side of the pitch to the other,
avoiding defenders, before clever passes or powerful shots lead to goals for his team. Talking
of goals, no player in the history of football has scored more goals in one season than the 73
Messi claimed in 2011-12.

[4] What other qualities does he have? Messi is calm when he has the ball – he never panics.
This is partly because he has great control. It sometimes looks like he has the ball glued to his
feet.

[5] Finally, Messi is seen as a more generous player than Ronaldo. He will often pass to a
team-mate in a situation where Ronaldo would probably shoot at goal.

Cristiano Ronaldo
[6] Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born on 5 February 1985. His club team is Real
Madrid (Spain) and he is captain of the Portugese national side. Ronaldo became the most
expensive player in history after moving from Manchester United to Real Madrid for 80
million pounds in 2009.

[7] So why do so many journalists and fans think Ronaldo is the greatest player on the planet?
As well as his amazing shooting – meaning that Ronaldo can score free-kicks from great
distances – the Real Madrid star can also use his head. Some spectators think Ronaldo is a
braver player than Messi because he dives in for headers in dangerous situations, risking
injury. He is also taller and physically stronger than Messi.

[8] Finally, Ronaldo is sometimes seen as more of a showman than Messi. He seems to like
the celebrity lifestyle. This can annoy some people. However, his muscular and athletic figure
shows that he still works incredibly hard to keep fit and keep competing with his great rival.

[9] Maybe we should call this competition a draw?

Answer the following questions in the answer sheet. Each question carries 1 mark unless otherwise
stated. For questions in * , answer in complete sentences.

3. In paragraph 4, which phrase has a similar meaning to ‘relaxed’?
