REDOX TITRATION:

A titration which deals with a reaction involving oxidation

and reduction of certain chemical species is known as redox
titration.

OXIDATION:
Reaction of metals or any other organic compound with
oxygen to give oxides are labelled as oxidation.

REDUCTION:
The removal of oxygen from metal oxides to give the metals
in their elemental form is labelled as reduction.

OXIDIZING AGENT:
An oxidizing agent is the element or compound in an oxidation-
reduction reaction that accepts an electron from another
species. Because the oxidizing agent is gaining electrons, we
say it has been reduced.

REDUCING AGENT:
a substance capable of bringing about the reduction of another
substance as it itself is oxidized; used in photography to lessen
the density of a negative or print by oxidizing some of the loose
silver
EXPERIMENT# 03
The given solution contains 8g mixture Potassium oxalate
and potassium sulphate dissolved/dm3 determine
percentage composition by volumetric method.
STANDARD REAGENT: 0.4M KMnO4
INDICATOR : KMnO4 itself
END POINT : Light pink
CHEMICAL EQUATION:
2KMnO4 +8H2SO4 +5COOk_COOk6K2SO4+2MnSO4+10CO2+8H2O
MOLE RATIO:
2 : 8
FORMULA:
M1V1/n1 = M2V2/n2
M2 = ?
Amount =molarity (molar weight)
% =amount/total (100)
PROCEDURE:
 Fill the burette with 0.4M KMnO4.
 Take 10ml salt of oxalic acid with the help of pipette in conical
flask.
 Add about half test tube of dilute H2SO4 in conical flask.
 Heat the given mixture at 50-600C.
 Titrate oxalic acid with KMnO4.
 Take 3 concordant readings.
OBSERVATION AND CALCULATION:
No. of obs. Initial reading Final reading Amount of
kMnO4
1. 10 29 19
2. 29 47.5 18.5

CALCULATION:
Average = (19+18.5)/2 = 18

M1v1/n1 = M2v2/n2

0.01(v1)/2 = M2 (10)/5

5(0.01)(18)/20 = M2

M2 = 0.9/20
M2 = 0.045
Amount = M2(molar weight)
= 0.045 (166)
= 7.47
% =amount/total(100)
= 7.47/8 (100)
=93.37%
% of H2SO4 =100-93.37
=6.625%
RESULT:
% of H2SO4 =6.625%
