Initial Activity
What I know about literature is that it is a written works, such as poems,
plays and novels that are considered to be very good and to have lasting
importance. Literature broadly refers to any collection of written or oral
work, but it more commonly and narrowly refers to writings specifically
considered to be an art form, especially prose fiction, drama, and poetry, in
contrast to academic writing and newspapers. Literature, as an art form, can
also include works in various non-fiction genres, such as autobiography,
diaries, memoir, letters, and the essay, as well as in the disciplines of history
and philosophy.

What I want to know more about literature is how did it begin like from
what piece of writing, who discovered literature and how does its existence
affect the world. I also want to know how the world would be like without
literature.

A. Write at least five (5) sentences on what you have discovered new about literature.
- In this module I have discovered that literature can be defined as so many things,
like how scholars perceive literature and defines it as writings manifesting
excellence form which also covers the expression of ideas of permanent universal
interest produced in a particular language, country, or age (Webster 9 th New
Collegiate Dictionary). This module has introduced me to literature and makes me
realize that literature could also mean the existence and experiences of a man that
is articulated through form. Literature can break the limit of people’s imagination
just by reading poetry and a story with fictional characters and imaginative places
that will effectively develop their artistic expression of feelings. In the key features
of literature, as described by Montealegre that literature is mainly a product or a
commentary on the life process, this is something new to me and discover that the
stories of the past is also because of the power of literature and gives us connection
to our forefather. I have also ascertain under timelessness key feature of literature
the significant truth about life that a literary work reveals should not wane and
dissipate as times passes by. This reminds me of the literary works that became
famous are still well known because of its beauty as well as its applicability that
can withstand the change of time.
B. Draw some images that will best represent what literature is all about. Write a
description. (bond paper)
C. Search and find out in the internet what other scholars say about the nature of

The nature of literature is very open-ended and could be answered in many

different ways. I would say that the difference between literature and writing that is
not literature would be the function. Literature functions to entertain and/or
education. What I mean is, as opposed to advertising or explaining, good literature
stands on its own as a good or great story. It has developed characters and a setting
and an identifiable plot. It has a conflict and resolution that is played out in the story
line. It tells a story and has a narrator whether it is first person narrator or omniscient
narrator. When we read literature we can love it or hate it or whether because it’s not
true. We are not expected to believe it as the truth. In the end, however, we can learn
a lot about how people interact and how they speak as opposed to how they think. We
can learn to examine our own thoughts and actions through comparing them to the
literature we read.

In addition to all that, we can learn how to write by reading literature. It can be
instructional.

D. As a student, how do you benefit from literature?

- As a student, I benefit from literature as to be an educated person. Literature gives
me ideas in writing such as poetry, short story and more. Through literature I can
connect to the story of the past and it also widens and makes my imaginations
limitless. Just as Montealegre said about literature that it engages us to share and
to impart a portion of ourselves which may be interesting and benefiting to other
people, I thought of the same thing about how I benefit from literature, that
literature has a piece or bunch of ideas which is interesting and benefiting to me as
a student.
