6. Motivation is the persistent attendance of students in a school (as measured
by the number of days attended).

Lesson Making Definitions:

2-3 Technicalversus Operational

In writing a research paper, you are often expected to give definitions of

keywords and phrases. Generally, you define terms so that your readers
understand exactly what is meant when certain key terms are used.

Activity 2: True or False

Directions: Write T on a separate sheet of paper if the statement is true otherwise F.

1. The primary reason to include definitions in your writing is to avoid

misunderstanding with your audience.
2. Define with "X is when" and "X is where" statements.
3. Keep the class portion of your definition short but adequate.
4. In defining a term in your research paper, use slang, jargon, colloquialisms, or
sexist language.
5. Your definition of an unfamiliar word should not lead your audience towards
looking up more words in order to understand your definition.

Students have to define key terms and concepts in their research papers. It is
important to include definitions of terms in order to understand the important key
terms being used in the study. These terms should be clearly defined according to
what experts say or how they are used in the study in order to make an easy
understanding of the term/concept and avoid ambiguous meaning to terms that
can be otherwise interpreted in different ways.

8 DO_Q4_ENGLISH_GRADE_ 10_ LESSON2-3

When to Use Definitions
1. When your writing contains a term that may be key to audience
understanding and that term could likely be unfamiliar to them
2. When a commonly used word or phrase has layers of subjectivity or
evaluation in the way you choose to define it
3. When the etymology (origin and history) of a common word might prove
interesting or will help expand upon a point
A formal definition consists of three parts:
1. The term (word or phrase) to be defined
2. The class of object or concept to which the term belongs
3. The differentiating characteristics that distinguish it from all others of
its class
A formal definition is a one-sentence explanation of the meaning of a word. When
you write a formal definition, first assign the term to a class and then explain how
it is different from other members of the class.

Example: Philosophy is the study of the fundamental nature of knowledge, reality,

and existence, especially when considered as an academic discipline.

Parts of a Formal Definition

discipline

There are different types of definitions that you can use, but we will focus on
technical and operational definitions.
A. Technical definition is a detailed description of a term, process,
phenomenon, or specialized words which belong or relate to a particular subject. It
is mostly used to explain or describe technical terms, and this definition could be
used in expanding the vocabulary since most of these terms are explained in the
exact manner. Terms and definitions of the words found in dictionary are examples
of technical definitions.

9 DO_Q4_ENGLISH_GRADE_ 10_ LESSON2-3

Example: An editorial is a newspaper article written by or on behalf of an editor
that gives an opinion on a topical issue.

B. Operational definition is a description of something in terms of the

operations (procedures, actions, or processes) by which it could be observed and
measured. This is commonly used to describe exactly what the variables are and
how they are measured within the context of the research study.

Example: If you were doing a study on the effects of game-based learning on

students’ academic performance, you would need to operationally define what you
mean by game-based learning and academic performance.

In this example, you might define game-based learning as follows:

● the use of games in learning
● an active learning technique where games are used to enhance student
learning

An academic performance might be operationally defined as how well a student

performs in class based on his/her written works, performance tasks, and quarterly
assessments.

An operational definition serves four purposes:

1. It establishes the rules and procedures the researcher uses to measure the
variable.
2. It provides unambiguous and consistent meaning to terms/variables that
otherwise can be interpreted in different ways.
3. It makes the collection of data as well as the analysis more focused and
efficient.
4. It guides what type of data and information we are looking for.

6-7 Making Definitions
This material in English is your guide in writing. You will be engaged in a process
where simple tasks will lead you to a goal-to use correct grammar in making
definitions. When you start to prepare for a research paper, you will realize that your
knowledge of correct grammar will help you a lot.

To observe correct grammar in making definitions, let us have a review of the rules in
Subject-Verb Agreement:
Basic Rule. A singular subject (she, Bill, car) takes a singular verb (is, goes, shines),
whereas a plural subject takes a plural verb.

Example: The list of items is/are on the desk.

If you know that list is the subject, then you will choose is for the verb.
Rule 1. A subject will come before a phrase beginning with of. This is a key rule
for understanding subjects. The word of is the culprit in many, perhaps
most, subject-verb mistakes.
Incorrect: A bouquet of yellow roses lend color and fragrance to the room.
Correct: A bouquet of yellow roses lends . . . (bouquet lends, not roses lend)
Rule 2. Two singular subjects connected by or, either/or, or neither/nor require
a singular verb.
Examples:
My aunt or my uncle is arriving by train today. Neither Juan nor Carmen is available.

Rule 3. The verb in an or, either/or, or neither/nor sentence agrees with the
noun or pronoun closest to it.
Examples:
Neither the plates nor the serving bowl goes on that shelf.

21 DO_Q4_ENGLISH_GRADE_ 10_ LESSON6-7

Rule 4. As a general rule, use a plural verb with two or more subjects when they
are connected by and.
Example: A car and a bike are my means of transportation. But note these exceptions:
Exceptions:
Breaking and entering is against the law. The bed and breakfast was charming.
In those sentences, breaking and entering and bed and breakfast are compound
nouns.
Rule 5. Sometimes the subject is separated from the verb by such words as along
with, as well as, besides, not, etc. These words and phrases are not part
of the subject. Ignore them and use a singular verb when the subject is
singular.

Word verb class Characteristics

Research is a process of that entails collection of data;

systematic documentation of critical information;
inquiry and analysis and interpretation of that
data/information, in accordance with
suitable methodologies set by specific
professional fields and academic
disciplines.

You will notice that the present tense of the verb is used in giving definitions. You have
to remember the BASIC RULE:

A singular subject takes a singular verb whereas a plural subject takes a plural
verb.

I. Directions: Read the paragraph about the appendices. Write the correct verbs that
agree with the subjects on a separate sheet of paper.

Education research papers often 1. (contain, contains) one or more

appendices. An appendix 2. (contain, contains) material that 3. (is, are) appropriate
for enlarging the reader's understanding, but that 4. (do, does) not fit very well into

summaries, questionnaires, interview questions, lengthy statistics, maps, pictures,
photographs, lists of terms, glossaries, survey instruments, letters, copies of historical
documents, and many other types of supplementary material. A paper may 6. (has,
have) several appendices. They 7. (is, are) usually placed after the main body of the
paper but before the bibliography or works cited section. They 8. (is, are) usually
designated by such headings as Appendix A, Appendix B, and so on.

"best-in-class" frames of reference.
12. Models (is, are) representations of objects, principles, processes, or ideas often
used for imitation or emulation
13. Causality (is, are) the relation between cause and effect.
14. Claim (is, are) a statement, similar to a hypothesis, which is made in response to

whether a study's data indicate a significant effect from the intervention and
allow the researcher to reject the null hypothesis.
5. Most researchers (agree, agrees) that a significance value of .05 or less [i.e.,
there is a 95% probability that the differences are real] sufficiently determines
significance.
6. Semantics (is, are) the relationship between symbols and meaning in a
linguistic system.

What deserves Cited?

A common mistake among authors is a lack of citations, inaccurate citations, or
citing too many items. So, what deserves cited in a reference book? Authors should
cite every fact that isn’t common knowledge, even if they paraphrase it in their own
writing. Ideas or theories from other publications should also be cited in reference
books, as well as a direct quote from someone.

27 DO_Q4_ENGLISH_GRADE_ 10_ LESSON8

Impact of Citations
The inner workings of a reference book are created to appeal to the readers and
support the author’s manuscript. Citations impact the credibility of the author as
well as their research. Using citations properly and including a bibliography is
important for authors because it gives your reader the comfort of knowing the
research presented to them is from credible, published sources. It’s also important
to give the original author credit for their findings or ideas through citations while
avoiding plagiarism. Authors must create an organized bibliography that allows their
readers to further observe the cited findings in the reference book.

ACTIVITY 1:
Directions: Choose the letter that corresponds to your answer. Write your
answer on a separate sheet of paper.

1. What is to be used when you intend to summarize, paraphrase, or quote from

4. Comprehensive definition with a logical pattern.
A. bibliography C. in-text citation
B. formal definition D. informal definition
5. What is APA?
A. Asian Psychological Association
B. American Psychological Association
C. Articles for Psychological Association
D. Author’s Presented Article

What is Multimedia?
Multimedia can have many definitions. Multimedia means that computer
information can be represented through audio, video, and animation in addition to
traditional media (i.e., text, graphics drawings, images).

A good general definition is:

Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer-controlled integration of text,
graphics, drawings, still and moving images (Video), animation, audio, and any other
media where every type of information can be represented, stored, transmitted, and
processed digitally.
A multimedia application is an application that uses a collection of multiple media
sources, e.g., text, graphics, images, sound/audio, animation, and video.

APA Quick Citation Guide

Include an IN-TEXT CITATION when you refer to, summarize, paraphrase, or quote
from another source. For every in-text citation in your paper, there must be a
corresponding entry in your reference list.
APA in-text citation style uses the author's last name and the year of publication,
for example: (Field, 2005). For direct quotations, include the page number as well,

29 DO_Q4_ENGLISH_GRADE_ 10_ LESSON8

for example. (Field, 2005, p. 14). For sources such as websites and e-books that
have no page numbers, use a paragraph number, for example: (Field, 2005, para,
1). More information on direct quotation of sources: without pagination is given on
the APA Style and Grammar Guidelines web page.
Example paragraph with in-text citation
A few researchers in the linguistics field have developed training programs designed
to improve native speakers' ability to understand accented speech (Thomas, 2004).
Their training. techniques are based on the research described above indicating that
comprehension improves with exposure to non-native speech. Derwing et al. (2002)
conducted their training with students preparing to be social workers but note that
other professionals who work with non-native speakers could benefit from a similar
program.
What is the difference between the two in-text citations above?
1. (Thomas, 2004). The open parentheses enclosed the author's name and year
of publication because it is not part of the main text.
2. Derwing et al. (2002). In here, only the year of publication is enclosed by the
parentheses because the in-text citation is part of the statement. It functions as the
subject of the sentence.

Note: In actual writing, the in-text citation should NOT be written in bold letters. The
above is presented as such to highlight the topic.

BIBLIOGRAPHY in the traditional note system, it is more common to use a

bibliography than a list of references. In some cases, when you use endnotes rather
than footnotes, an additional bibliography may not be required. (Check with your
lecturer).
At the end of your assignment, attach a list of all material that you have consulted
in preparing your work. The list may contain items you have chosen not to quote
from or which you have decided were not helpful. Nevertheless, these items have
formed part of your preparation and should be included. The list thus produced
forms your bibliography. Your bibliography may contain just one primary text item
if that is honestly all you have used. The bibliography is organized according to the
authors' last names, arranged in alphabetical order.
Bibliographical entries differ from footnotes or endnotes in a straightforward way
that is easy to remember. Bibliographies end assignments, and each component of
an individual entry is presented in final form, punctuated by full stops.
Bibliographical entries may vary in complexity. In general, use the following ordering
systems as your guide in presenting materials. Appropriate punctuation is shown.

Key Info
Make a list to keep track of ALL the books, magazines, and websites you read as you
follow your background research plan. Later this list of sources will become your
bibliography. Most teachers want you to have at least three written sources of
information. Write down, photocopy, or print the following information for each
reference you find. You can use the Science Buddies Bibliography Worksheet to help
you.
Collect this information for each printed source: Collect this
information for each Web Site:
Author name Author and editor names (if
available)
Title of the publication Title of the page (if available)
(and the title of the article
If it's a magazine or encyclopedia)
Date of publication The company or organization
who posted the webpage
The place of publication of a book The Web address for the page
(called a URL)
The publishing company of a book The last date you looked at
the page

The volume number of a magazine or printed encyclopedia

The page number(s)
APA is the style of documentation of sources used by the American Psychological
Association. This form of writing research papers is used mainly in the social
sciences, like psychology, anthropology, sociology, as well as education and other
fields.
Sample Bibliography using APA:
The basic format for a book citation requires listing the author's name, the title of
the book, the publisher's name, and the date of publication. Edited books, when
cited in full, will list the editor's name instead of an author's name.

Schools, skills, and learning: The impact of COVID-19 on education
Impacts on education: Schools
Two pieces of evidence are useful. Carlsson et al. 2015 consider a situation in which
young men in Sweden have differing numbers of days to prepare for important tests.
These differences are conditionally random allowing the authors to estimate a causal
effect of schooling on skills.
A different way into this question comes from Lavy 2015, who estimates the impact
on learning of differences in instructional time across countries.
Impacts on education: Families
Families are central to education and are widely agreed to provide major inputs into
a child’s learning, as described by Bjorklund and Salvanes 2011.
Key differences include Oreopoulos et al. 2006 the amount of time available to
devote to teaching, the non-cognitive skills of the parents, resources (for example,
not everyone will have the kit to access the best online material), and also the
