Assignment Brief and Guidance:

Data and information are core to any organizational business process. Meaningful information is a
necessity to drive profitable business actions. The concept of Business Intelligence (BI) has
evolved through technologies such as Decision Support Systems (DSS) to a number of tools,
technologies, architectures and methods which involves data cleaning, data integration, data
mining, data evaluation and data representation. Hence BI can be identified as a software suite of
software and services to transform data into actionable intelligence and knowledge.

Scenario
Select any organization of your choice and assume that you are recently recruited as an
Associate Business Analyst to study organization’s current performance. Your job is to study
the systems currently in place to support the business processes in the organization and suggest
how Business Intelligence tools can be applied to improve the current situation. You are
required to prepare a report to be submitted to the Board of Directors covering the following
tasks.

Task 1
1.1. Examine business and supporting processes of the chosen organization and differentiate
between unstructured and semi structured data with examples.
1.2. Evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of using application software as a mechanism to
support the business processes in the organization.

Task 2
2.1. Compare with examples, the systems currently available to support decision making
process at different management levels of the organization and suggest information systems /
technologies that can be implemented to enhance the decision-making process.
2.2. Determine what business intelligence is and select one business intelligence tool to be
implemented to the organization. Justify your selection with reference to the functionalities of
the suggested tool.
Task 3
3.1. Design a functional interface to one of the processes that support decision making of the
suggested BI tool in task 2.2. Critically review the design and evaluate how it meets the
specified business or use requirement.
3.2. Based on the review, identify the customizations required to the initial design. Customize
the functional interface to ensure it meets the user requirements.

Task 4
4.1. Research the competitors of the chosen organization and discuss how they have used
business intelligence tools to make decision making process more effective and improve the
overall performance of the organizations.
4.2. Sharing data within the organization through a BI tool can raise legal, ethical and
professional concerns. Explore the legal issues that may result when using business intelligence
tools (Eg: Data protection laws, Cyber security, etc.) and evaluate how the chosen
organization and extend the target audience / gain a competitive advantage by securely
exploiting Business Intelligence tools.
