Definitions

 Lifting Equipment - equipment that may be attached to and below the crane hooks or
equipment which by design is to support a lifted load
 Certification - assurance by the manufacturer or by a qualified inspector that the lifting
equipment is safe for use
 Safe Working Load (SWL)- 1/5th of the breaking load
 Load Test - physically loading a piece of equipment to a predetermined load to
ensure that the equipment is capable of regularly lifting at the Safe Working Load
(SWL) Limit. Testing shall be performed by a qualified inspector.
 Inspection - Examination of lifting equipment to ensure that it is safe for use.

Category I - Slings
 Equipment List
- Wire rope slings including those attached to cargo containers, etc.
- Chain slings
- Polyproplyene or polyester belt slings may be used as an alternative to chain or wire slings if
constructed as follows:
 straight strop with a soft becketed eye at each end
 straight strop with "D Rings" at each end
- Cargo nets
- Personnel Baskets marked with the maximum capacity by weight (pounds or kilograms)
- Chain blocks
- Come-alongs

 Inspection Requirements
- Obtain initial load test certificate before being placed in service
- Recertify and color code every six months by an inspector
- Defective equipment identified during inspection is withdrawn from service, then junked, or
repaired and retested to meet original Safe Work Load (SWL) requirement
- Visually inspect and verify the proper color code prior to use
- Equipment that is out of date or missing color code is to be removed from service until re-
inspected and properly color coded
- Personnel using slings are responsible for ensuring that they are free of defects such as frayed or
broken strands or straps, excess corrosion or chemical attack, crushing, kinking or damage caused
by abrasion and stretching. If all these checks are not 100% acceptable it should be taken out of
service, and repaired or destroyed by cutting them in half prior to discarding them..

- Pulleys (Pulley Blocks, - Eye Bolts

Snatch Blocks, Sheaves) - Hooks
- Air Tuggers - Plate Clamps
- Cargo Containers - Shackles
- Drum Lifting Device - Other Similar hardware.

 Inspection
- Personnel using devices routinely inspects for bends, cracks, rust, damage, etc.
- Defective equipment is removed from service, repaired and inspected, or junked.

Category III - Special Appliances and Fixtures

 Equipment List
- Cargo baskets
- Hoist runway beams
- Special lifting tools, supports, stands
- Spreader bars (frames)
- Cylinder Racks
- Barrel racks
- Transportable tanks

 Inspection
- Personnel using devices routinely inspects for bends, cracks, rust, damage, etc.
- Ensure devices are marked, stamped, or stenciled to indicate the maximum load capacity or the
specific use.
- Equipment without markings or damaged are to be removed from service, inspected and repaired
or junked.
- Runway beams and hoists are marked with their maximum capacity.

 Usage
- Equipment supplied by a manufacturer for a specific lift (engine/compressor tools, spreader bars)
shall be used only for the specific intended purpose.

Identification and Records

 Category I Equipment will be identified with a unique identification clearly marked on the equipment that
including serial number and safe working load. The identification will preferably be stamped into the body
of the equipment, but may be done with a fixed tag.
 Category I equipment shall be color coded to indicate compliance with semiannual inspection and
recertification. The color code will be affixed or painted onto the lifting equipment. The following four
colors, blue, orange, green and yellow will be used in rotation. The current color code will be posted at all
sites using lifting equipment.
 Category II Equipment (Miscellaneous Hardware) shall be permanently marked with the manufacturers
rated SWL in clearly visible. Category II hardware does not require color coding.
 Category III Equipment (Special Appliances and Fixtures) shall be marked with the SWL capacity or the
specific purpose.

Test Load Table

 All Category I Equipment 2 x SWL.

Category II (Miscellaneous Hardware)

 Cargo Containers, Plate Clamps, Shackles, Pulleys and Eye Bolts 2 x SWL.

 Single sheave block 4 X SWL

 Multiple sheave block (less than 20 tons) 2 X SWL
 Multiple sheave block (20 - 40 tons) SWL +20 tons
