Globalization is the intensification of global interconnectedness through a whole

range of relations such as international communication and media networks ,
financial systems , the expansion of international corporate activity and the
increasing flow of people including migrants , refugees and tourists across
national boundaries (Giddens 1990 , Tomlison 1999) .According to Boyd Barrett
globalization is the process of stretching power and communication across the
globe .Martha Van Der Bly asserts that globalization is those processes by which
the people of the world are incorporated into a single world society while
Robertson refers it to the compression of the world and the intensification of
consciousness of the world as a whole .

Globalization is very important because it brings positive effects to today’s global

media structures .Access to new cultures , the spread of technology and
innovation , higher standards of living across the globe , access to new markets
and access to new talent are the important effects of globalization .This text is
focusing on the concept of globalization and its importance to today’s global
media structures .However we have to look the other side of the negativity of
globalization which will be also mentioned in this text .

To begin with , globalization is very important in understanding of today’s global

media structures because it enable the access to new culture .It is now very easy
for almost everyone to access foreign culture in the comfort of their
homes .Food , movies , music and art can be accessed by almost
everyone .Africans are now addicted to Bollywood culture through watching serial
shows from India through the Digital satellite television popularly known as
Dstv .Cultures are accessed especially food , music and movies .Also individuals
who travel around the the world for tourism and business try different foods ,
listen to different music , read different books , gain exposure to different media
outlets and learn to express themselves even poorly in another language gain a
broader perspective on the world .However it is important to note that culture is
lost through globalization , the success of certain cultures throughout the world
causes other countries to emulate them , but when cultures starts losing their
distinctive features are result will be losing global diversity .Because foreign
countries are easy to access societies begin to meld hence culture is lost .

Globalization is important in the understanding of today’s global media studies

because it has led to creation of new markets globally .Businesses that operate
globally gain great deals including markets , new customers and diverse revenue
streams .They also get and benefit flexible and innovative easy to grow their
business overseas .Professional employee organization (PEOs) makes it easy to
employ workers in other countries quickly and compliantly .This is an advantage
as businesses have no need to establish and establish a foreign entity to expand
overseas .Globalization has enable companies to explore technology talent in
booming markets .A good example is markets such as Berlin or Stockholm rather
than Silicon valley .Another fact is that global hiring of workers become easier
than ever since companies compliantly employ employees overseas .Despite the
positive effects on business globalization has also lead to increased
competition .Businesses that contend in the global marketplace will naturally face
competition from companies all over the world .Consumers demand high quality
goods and cheap products , companies who intent to produce those goods will
prosper .Products are expensive to export to global markets , they face challenges
of tariffs and export fees .However this depends with the type of market and
goods exported .

To add on this , globalization has led to high standards of living to both developing
and developed countries .Estimates from the World Bank suggests that poverty
decreased by 35% since 1990 , which means nearly a billion people have moved
out of it since the period to 2015 .There is no question that globalization has
transformed the modern world .Globalization shapes and it will continue to shape
the world as it will shape the way people do business .Commerce is encouraged
and everyone benefitted from the globalization .Technology has also spread
globally many countries around the world remain constantly connected and
knowledge , technological advances tend to travel so quickly because
globalization has fueled the movement of technologies faster than ever
before .This also means that scientific advances made in Asia can be at work in
the United States in a matter of days .This is one of the importance of
globalization , technology has increased rapidly .Cell phones came quickly to
African continent , phone use currently growing every year in Africa and
approaching 90% in countries such as South Africa .Rapid technological advances
have benefits other than economic ones as people now doing business online
using these cell phones for example in Zimbabwe one can send and receive
money via the mobile phone .Services like Ecocash , telecash and one money are
accessed through these mobile phones .However this technology has injected
crimes like scams and also cyber attack .Since people keep money in banks
connected to the phone scamming has risen especially in developed countries ,
hacking of accounts has increased .Politics is also discussed on these cell phones
on platforms like whatsapp , facebook and snapchart .I t is very important to
know that globalization is very important and somehow very dangerous to the
communities in the globe .

Globalization is important to the understanding of today’s global media structures

because it allow all people to see what is happening in other countries through
news agencies .News all over the world is presented on stations like Algezera ,
CNN and BBC news .This helps one to know what is happening in India whilist
settling at home or work in Angola .Due to this technology trough globalization
we have access to deep down secrets of how other countries are governed and
how elections are held .Weather is also predicted and people have to take
protective measures .This is all importance of globalization which has led
countries to be one village known a global village .This also led to countries to put
heads together and help each other .While globalization offers a lot of importance
and benefits it is also important to face the other side of it ,language barriers ,
time zones and also cultural difference .Also immigration challenges cause a lot if
headaches internally .In some countries it is very difficult to secure a Visa for
employees that are foreign uncertain .

To stretch further , exploitation of foreign labor by successive classes is a curse .A

good example is that American companies have been known to use foreign cheap
labor to make cheap American goods .Developed countries ha caused pollution
to developing countries since globalization encourages industrialization but
profits soar abroad .At mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where metals
are needed for electronics abound gold and tungsten , tin and tantalum , child
soldiers are used which is child labor .Since gold prices are high enough to
develop the country it is questionable that why is the country still at a
stale .Globalization has not alleviated the poverty and violence in the country
that’s is exploitation .This proves also that even though globalization makes our
lives better it is somehow brings challenges .

In summation it can be concluded that , globalization is an established part of the

modern world, it is very important in the understanding of today’s global media
studies .It has many benefits , it brings benefits to our to our everyday lives such
an easy access to a variety of different cuisines and technological developments
by countries half a world away .The world is so connected , it is getting smaller
each day , businesses are controlled globally and electronically which is much
easier .Businesses have take new levels as international markets are now the way
and also unlocking new opportunities in the global marketplace .While
globalization offers many benefits , it is not without challenges .Companies face
challenges when taking business globally .They also face problems like managing
employee immigration , incurring tariffs and export fees , payroll and compliance
challenges and also foreign worker exploitation .Cultures are lost and also new
cultures erode language and customs .
