Gerunds & Infinitives

A gerund is the noun form of a verb that ends in -ing.

Examples: - playing - dancing
- eating - being
A gerund is a noun, and is the subject or object of the sentence.
Examples: Cooking
studying

An infinitive is verb base form. The infinitive of a verb has 2 forms:

1. The infinitive with to
- I want to speak to you.
- We came to work, not to play.
2. The infinitive without to
- She made us wait for half an hour.

Infinitives can also be the subject or object of a sentence.

*** All verbs (except for modals) have both a gerund and an infinitive form;
the trick is deciding which form we need ***

Examples: I love watching movies on Fridays = I love to watch movies on Fridays.

Dancing is my passion. = To dance is my passion.
