NAMING AND WRITING CHEMICAL FORMULAS OF ALCOHOLS AND PHENOLS

OBJECTIVE:

The objective of this activity is to be able to name and write alcohols using the formula C nH 2n+1OH
and name phenols using the formula C6H6O.

MATERIALS:

Styrofoam, pen and paper

PROCUDURE:

Using the Styrofoam, create a model of methanol and catechol. Then name it using the formulas given.

RESULTS:

We use the formula C nH 2n+1OH for methanol because it’s an alcohol. The “n” indicates the number of
carbon atoms present in the compound and after counting how may, we then substitute it in the
formula. Methanol has 1 carbon, so C(1)H2(1)+10H equals C2H5OH. On the other hand we use the
formula C6H6O for catechol because it’s a phenol. Some procedure and substitution process is done, so
the molecular formula of catechol is C6H6O2.
