NAMING AND WRITING CHEMICAL FORMULAS OF ESTERS

The objective of this activity is to be able to name and write esters using the formula RCOOR’
Materials:
Pen and paper
Procedure:
Draw a compound called methyl butanoate and determine its functional group.
Result:
A functional group of esters is present in the compound. We know that esters are carboxylic
acid derivatives, and since the –OH group is replaced with an alkyl group which is the methyl
therefore we can conclude that ethyl butanoate is an ester.
