NAMING AND WRITING CHEMICAL FORMULAS OF AMIDES

The objective of this activity is to be able to name and write amides using the formula
RC(=O)NR′R″
Materials:
Pen and paper
Procedure:
Draw a compound called N-methyl propanamide and determine its functional group.
Result:
A functional group of amides is present in the compound. We know that amides are carboxylic
acid derivatives, and since the –OH group is replaced with an alkyl group which is the methyl
therefore we can conclude that N-methyl propanamideis an amide.
