NAMING AND WRITING CHEMICAL FORMULAS OF THIOESTERS AND ACYL PHOSPHATES.

OBJECTIVE:
The objective of this activity is to be able to name and write thioesters using the formula RCOSR
and name acyl phosphates using the formula RCOOPO32-.
MATERIALS:
Pen and paper
PROCEDURE:
Draw a compound called methyl ethanethioate and Propanoyl phosphate and determine its
functional group.
RESULT:
A functional group of thioesters is present in the compound named methyl ethanethiote. We
know that thioesters are carboxylic acid derivatives, and since the –OH group is replaced with
an alkyl group which is the methyl therefore we can conclude that methyl ethanethioate is a
thioester. And for the propanoyl phosphate compound, the functional group present is an acyl
phosphate.
