DOLLARS AND SENSE By David Uffington Yard Sale Tips Summer is a great time to de-clutter and make a few dollars at the same time. Holding a yard sale can be work, but it also can be lucrative. Here are some tips to make your yard sale successful. Posters and signs: Put up notices in grocery stores, the library, senior center -- anywhere you can find community bulletin boards. Be sure what the laws are in your area about posting on telephone poles. Make a list of the sign locations so you can take them down quickly after the sale. Ads: Go in with others on the cost and hold a multi-family sale. The bigger the sale, the more traffic youre likely to get. Organize: Set aside the items you want to sell. Gather user manuals, clean your items and make them look as attractive as possible. Pricing: Put prices on everything, ideally where the sticker easily can be seen. Put bigger signs on items such as furniture. Recruit the kids: You might convince them to sell their unused toys if you allow them to keep the money. If nothing else, you can clear some of the clutter out of their rooms. Clothing: Make sure items are washed and dried and hung on hangers. Check the pockets. Books: Price them cheaply enough and theyll move quickly. Flip through the books to make sure you havent left anything between the pages. Cash only: Put up a sign that says youll only take cash -- and stick to it. If someone wants something, be willing to hold an item for a few minutes while your customer runs to the nearest ATM. Generally, however, people know theyre going to spend money at yard sales, and they bring the cash they need. Table displays: Have enough tables so that merchandise is up off the ground. Dont make people bend over and paw through boxes of stuff under a table, especially clothing and books. Paper or plastic? Collect plastic grocery bags for people to use. Be honest: If the printer doesnt do color photos well but is great with black ink, say so on the price sticker. Making change: Have plenty of bills and coins to make change. Designate a family member to run the cash box -- and not leave it unattended for a second. Even better: Use a pouch that belts around your waist. David Uffington regrets that he cannot personally answer reader questions, but will incorporate them into his column whenever possible. Write to him in care of King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send e-mail to columnreply@gmail.com. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

BOOKS -- Recommended Reading Dragonstone/The Dragons Heart By Michelle Young Reviewed by Cindy Elavsky Michelle Youngs impressive debut novel, Dragonstone, hits all the notes that a fantasy/romance novel should: strong women, gorgeous men, lovely scenery and life-altering adventure. However, this aint your mothers romance novel. With Dragonstone, Ms. Young has created her own niche in the fantasy genre, imagining a world where magic rules the land, dragons roam the skies, and everyone has their secrets.

The reader is transported to the world of Latharia, where Lady Katerina must fulfill the prophecy of defeating the black magic that is threatening to overtake her land. Because her magic was awakened by an act of violence, her Dragonstone, which holds all of her magic power, turns black. Not wanting to use her magic because of the evil that controls the black Dragonstone, she rids herself of it. Soon Latharia is surrounded by forces that do not want Katerina to inherit the kingdom. With the help of her personal guard, Logan, Katerina must retrieve her Dragonstone and defeat the evil forces that would prefer to reign with evil black magic. Youngs new novel, The Dragons Heart, picks up nearly 25 years later, with Katerinas daughter, Syrena, fated to continue her mothers quest to rid Latharia of black magic and defeat the evil Kyron once and for all. In order to fulfill her destiny, she must learn to harness her beast-master magic to help her save her kingdom, all the while trying to gauge if the mysterious Blaze is someone she can trust, or if he has an agenda of his own. Dragonstone and The Dragons Heart arent your average fantasy/romance novels. They tell a story of love, faith, bravery and the importance of family. Its a must-read series for book lovers of any genre. (c) 2011 King Features Synd., Inc.

(May 9, 2011)- When it comes to indoor tanning, sometimes mother doesnt know best. Results of a new survey by the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy) found that a large percentage of Caucasian teen girls and young women who use tanning beds reported that their mothers also use tanning beds. When asked if anyone in their immediate or extended families uses a tanning bed, indoor tanners were more than twice as likely to have a family member who used a tanning bed (65 percent) compared to their non-indoor tanning peers (28 percent). Specifically, indoor tanners were four times as likely (42 percent) to indicate that their moms use tanning beds than those respondents who were not indoor tanners (10 percent). Studies show indoor tanning increases a persons risk of melanoma by 75 percent. Melanoma- the deadliest form of skin cancer - is increasing faster in females 15-29 years old than in males of the same age group. Mothers who tan indoors are not only putting themselves at risk for skin cancer, but they also may be putting their daughters at risk, said dermatologist Ellen S. Marmur, MD, FAAD, associate professor of dermatology at The Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. The survey shows how influential mothers can be on their daughters behavior, and that is why its critical for mothers to set a good example by not tanning. The vast majority of indoor tanners also reported that their own use of tanning beds was not a secret in their families. When questioned as to whether their parents were aware of their use of tanning beds, 94 percent of indoor tanners indicated that their parents did know that they were using or have used a tanning bed. In addition, the survey indicated that a number of teens and young women feel pressured to be tan by their peers. For example, the survey found that those respondents who used tanning beds in the past year were nearly twice as likely to indicate feeling peer pressure to be tan (49 percent) compared to respondents who were not tanning bed users (28 percent). A vast majority of indoor tanners (96 percent) also reported having friends who tan indoors and/or outdoors. Tanning is a dangerous, unhealthy behavior, similar in seriousness to smoking or drinking alcohol, where teens often succumb to peer pressure, said Dr. Marmur. Yet, it is troubling that so many parents are aware of their teens use of tanning beds and allow this harmful behavior to continue or even set a bad example themselves by indoor tanning. We urge parents to educate their teens about the dangers of UV exposure from tanning beds and to discourage or prohibit this activity for all family members. Headquartered in Schaumburg, Ill., the American Academy of Dermatology (Academy), founded in 1938, is the largest, most influential, and most representative of all dermatologic associations. With a membership of more than 17,000 physicians worldwide, the Academy is committed to: advancing the diagnosis and medical, surgical and cosmetic treatment of the skin, hair and nails; advocating high standards in clinical practice, education, and research in dermatology; and supporting and enhancing patient care for a lifetime of healthier skin, hair and nails. For more information, contact the Academy at 1-888-462-DERM (3376) or www.aad.org About the 2011 Indoor Tanning: Teen and Young Adult Women Survey: More than 3,800 white, non-Hispanic females ages 14 to 22 responded to a nationwide survey online to determine their tanning knowledge, attitudes and behavior. The survey was conducted by Relevant Research, Inc (formerly RH Research) of Chicago from December 28, 2010, to January 11, 2011. Data were weighted by age and region based on the US Census Current Population Survey (released in 2010). Submitted by Olean Medical Group. fb

It is far more significant than the individual numbers associated with HDL and LDL High cholesterol levels can affect young and old alike and those high numbers put you at risk for strokes and heart attacks. However, getting the total cholesterol count down is not an insurmountable task. Exercise will do it for many people - good physical activity that boosts your heart rate, like fast walking for 20 - 30 minutes per day. Although, I recommend that you begin slowly at first and always check with your primary care provider before beginning any new health regimen. Dont be afraid to get out and walk. Its good for your heart. Eating healthier meals may bring down those cholesterol levels for some people. Eliminate fried foods and whole dairy products from your diet. Reduce your fat intake altogether. The dietary reference intake for fat in adults is 20%-35% of total daily calories from fat. Thats about 44 to 77 grams of fat a day if you eat the recommended average of 2,000 calories a day. Eat very little or no foods with saturated fats and certainly none with trans fats. It is very important that you read the nutrition labels on all food products - even those which claim to be good for you - like natural or organic. Keep track of what you eat throughout the day, writing down each component of each meal, if you truly want to lose weight. Total the fats, the cholesterols, and the calories. Once you go back and review what you have eaten, you may find that what you thought was a healthy food or meal, really wasnt. It is good to know what you are consuming. The safest foods are vegetables and fruits. They should be the largest portions of each of your meals each day. Add wild salmon and tuna, 4 ounces twice each week, and you will be boosting your omega-3 fatty acids, essential for maintaining a healthy balance of nutrition. Add a limited amount of walnuts and almonds each day and plenty of fiber, in the form of oatmeal and flax, and you will be well on your way to lowering those numbers. Exercise and healthy eating will lead to significant weight loss and that alone can lower your bad cholesterol. However, weight loss wont do it for a certain percentage of our population and those people must be treated with medication specifically developed to block the enzyme that helps to make cholesterol. Unfortunately, for a few of us, cholesterol is a substance, made naturally in our bodies. There are several drugs on the market and your provider will be able to determine which is the best for you. No matter which solution works for you, adopt it and stick with it and you will find that you will be able to lead a more active and fulfilling life. fb

SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles Paying for Retirement Is Major Concern More and more of us are concerned about how were going to pay for retirement, or whether can retire at all, especially as the economy has soured. The Society of Actuaries recently issued a report entitled The Impact of the Economy on Retirement Risks about how were handling our fears. Here are some facts its survey uncovered: Nearly half of those polled who have not yet retired are very concerned about retirement finances, much more so than ever before. Two-thirds of retirees surveyed say their finances are worse than before the economy took a downturn, with a quarter saying much worse. For those not yet retired, the figures are even higher. Those who banked on having return from investments have suffered from low interest rates, and those who considered their home a nest egg for retirement money are hard hit. A quarter of retirees fear they might need to return to work, while two-thirds who havent retired think theyll need to work longer. People who havent yet retired have more concerns than those who have already retired. The major concerns are paying for long-term health care, the falling value of investments, running out of money, inability to maintain a standard of living and not having anything to leave to heirs. Seniors have more debt than they expected to have at retirement. But if theres a retirement strategy the majority agreed on, its this: Get rid of consumer and mortgage debt before retirement by paying off credit cards and cutting back on spending for gifts, vacation and restaurants. SENIOR NEWS LINE by Matilda Charles Are You Entitled to More Benefits? If youre not sure youre getting all the benefits youre entitled to, or if you assist someone who might qualify for more, there is an easy way to find out. Benefits Checkup is a National Council on Aging website that lets you hunt for information on all kinds of benefits. Whether its prescription costs, utilities, taxes, meals and more, you could be eligible for help. The questions might seem a bit intrusive in some areas, but thats to help figure out where you might qualify for assistance. Theres no need to give your name, however. At the website [www.benefits checkup.org], click on Find Benefits, then click Comprehensive. Before you begin, check the Click Here button for a list of things youll need to have before you start. For example, youll need to know all your current income and assets for you and anyone else in your home, as well as the amounts of your utilities and medical bills not covered by insurance. If youre on prescription drugs, have those handy as youll be entering the names of the medicines you take. If your spouse is a veteran, they want to know that as well, as there may be veterans benefits youre eligible for. Be patient as you go through the questions, and answer all that apply to you. At the very end youll see a results overview with a list of programs you might qualify for. Each link is a description of the program, local contact information and an application form. If you like, you can print out the results or go back and change some of your answers. Give it a try! You might just qualify for benefits that you never even considered. *** KEVIN GUEST HOUSE Located in Buffalo, NY, The Kevin Guest House was established as a memorial to Kevin Garvey, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Garvey of Sharon, Pa. although Im not sure if my advice will help convince your mother-inlaw. You can lead a horse to water, but you cant make it drink, one adage goes. Still, its worth a try, as this kind of extreme thermostat exercise costs money in terms of the power used to generate all that cool air. Many people try to save money by turning the air conditioning unit completely off after the sun goes down. This can work, but as your mother-in-law has found out, once the summer sun comes up, the house takes longer to cool down. Dropping the thermostat temperature selector 20 degrees does not make this process any faster. A more efficient way to keep the house at a comfortable temperature would be to raise the thermostat just four to six degrees at night (or when shes out of the house for a long time during the day). In the morning, or when she returns from work or her shopping trip, she should then set the thermostat back down to the daytime temperature that is most comfortable for her. An even better way -- especially if she just keeps cranking that old analog thermostat down -- would be to install a digital thermostat. These can be installed in the same spot as the old analog thermostat, usually with the same wiring. The advantage of the digital thermostat is twofold: First, it can be set at exactly the temperature she wants. Second, it can be programmed to automatically raise or lower the temperature at the times you specify. So, if she wants the house to be warmer at night, the digital thermostat can be programmed to raise the temperature until a set time ... say, 6 a.m., when it will lower the temperature to her preferred daytime levels. HOME TIP: To improve cooling efficiency and energy consumption, inspect your homes insulation and replace any thats damaged or substandard. Send your questions or home tips to ask@thisisahammer.com, or write This Is a Hammer, c/o King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. THIS IS A HAMMER By Samantha Mazzotta Thermostat Wars Q: Im having kind of a battle with my mother-in-law. She insists on dialing the thermostat all the way down to the left (50 degrees F.) in the morning, saying that this will cool down the house faster. Correct me if Im wrong, but doesnt this stress out the air conditioner? Is there a better way to cool down the house? How can I convince her of it? -Jerry in Little Rock, Ark. A: Its definitely not the most efficient way to cool a house,

When do you just stop? It was a beautiful spring day--mild temperatures with a gentle breeze and warm sunshine. It was a day made for working outside around the farm, one of my favorite hobbies. So thats what I was doing. I was even blessed to have a friend helping me. Well, after he left, I thought, Okay, I can do some more by myself and I started scheming what to do. It was about 6:30 in the evening, but the sun wasnt setting until around 8:00 so I knew I had lots of time to get stuff done. Just then, as I walked up the hill, I glanced over at our new meditation garden. I planted some rose bushes in a large bed, and put a glider bench there, facing the sunset. Its quite peaceful as it overlooks one of the horse pastures. I stopped and thought for a moment about how I was home by myself and what a perfect time it was to enjoy the new garden. And so I went inside, fixed a sandwich, and came back out to enjoy a gorgeous sunset. Today, find a time and place to just stop and meditate for a few minutes. Remember youre a human being, not a human doing as you work positive today. A public service message brought to you by

ITS THAT TIME OF THE YEAR By Fred Lewis, M.D. - Olean Medical Group, LLP Its that time of the year again. Our eyes begin to water and our noses stuff. If you think you have a cold, think again. You may be suffering from spring allergies. How do you know if you have allergies? Take this short quiz. Have you been sneezing a lot lately? Are there certain times of the year when your nose is very itchy? Are your eyes watery and/or red? Do you have a runny nose with clear drainage? Are you wheezing and coughing ? If you answered yes to many of these questions, it is likely that you are allergic to something. If you have seasonal allergies, then you may need to take allergy medications, which can include antihistamines, steroid nasal sprays, and eye allergy medications. Watch for my daily pollen counts and avoid going outside during days when the counts are high, use nasal washes, take a decongestant, and consider allergy testing and allergy shots
for persistent symptoms. Also, remember to start your allergy medications before your typical allergy season begins. Dramatic strides in allergy medication therapy research have developed effective allergy treatment options. The three major allergy medicine categories include: antihistamines, decongestants, and anti-inflammatory medications. In general, allergy treatment begins with avoidance of the triggers. Then medication is added, and if neither avoidance or medication are effective, then allergy shots are added, which immunize the patient to the pollen itself. Avoidance: It is often hard to avoid pollen when its in the air we breathe but here are some basic avoidance tips: Wash pets that have been outdoors Wash pollen off your hair and skin Keep your car and house windows closed Use air conditioning Still, for most seasonal allergy sufferers, avoidance is impractical and doesnt do the trick. The good news is that there are very effective medications that address a range of symptoms and your allergist can best help you decide which ones will be most effective. Remember, always check with your primary care physician or your allergist before taking any over the counter medications, particularly if you are already taking prescription medications. Dr. Fred Lewis is a board certified allergist at the Olean Medical Group. fb
COLLECTING By Larry Cox Barbie Dolls Q: I am the owner of seven Barbie dolls, all approximately 35 years old. They are in their original boxes. I have no idea of how much they are worth and hope you can help me. -- Stella, Sun City West, Ariz. A: According to Blue Book: Dolls and Values by Jan Foulke (Hobby House Press), condition is extremely important in determining the value of Barbie dolls. Mint condition means the doll has never been played with, coloring is beautiful, hair is perfect and all accessories are present. A rule of thumb dictates that to price out-oforiginal-box dolls and accessories, deduct 50 percent, for lightly played with dolls, another 25 percent. Lois Berger is a collector, and she might be able to help you
established the value of your dolls. Her address is 2323 Lincoln St., Beatrice, NE 68310. Paul David is a dealer who also publishes a Barbie newsletter. His contact information is 610 Blackwater Road, Chillicothe, OH 45601.

S.W.A.M.P. Teen Center before renovation. On June 2, the door officially opened for the S.W.A.M.P. (which stands for Success With Achievement, Motivation, and Preparedness). The center is for students that have completed 712th grade and is open to the teens around the area as well as Port Allegany. The girls wanted a teen center that would provide educational and social activities. During the summer some possibilities for activities are Karaoke Night, Guitar Hero Play-Off, Rock the Square, 4-on-4 basketball, just to name a few. During the school months, the center would like to provide after school tutoring, nutrition classes, mentoring opportunities, financial responsibility classes, resume writing classes, workshops for non-academic careers, cooking classes, intergenerational computer classes, and more. There is a need for adults to help at the center during open hours and help with activities. The teen center is currently looking for adults and teens to serve as board members so it can become a non-profit corporation.
S.W.A.M.P. Teen Center after renovation. In December the girls from the Challenge & Change project and their leaders were invited to attend the Port Allegany Rotary for a delicious luncheon and then given an opportunity to present their project to the Rotary Club which was held at the Port Allegany Moose Club. That meeting caught the attention of the Moose Family Center and they offered their assistance in helping the teen center with space to hold large events and activities. The Girl Scout Troop was given a grant for their participation for the Challenge & Change project and with that money the girls purchased items that they would need for the center including a flat screen TV, DVD player, bean bag chairs and misc. items. The Moose sponsored their first event on May 6. It was a HAT theme dance with refreshments, novelties, and SWAMP T-shirts for sale. Prizes were awarded for best hats.
Back row: Jeana Fleck, Tammy Lindsay and Dusti Dennis (HUD representative). Bottom row: Shelby Vidonish, Caitlin Lindsay and Cynthia Setzer (the three Girl Scouts that went to the Challenge & Change in Warren.)
Holding the centerpiece are: Chrissy Safford, Caitlin Lindsay, Cynthia Setzer, Shelby Vidonish and Sara Hardes. These are other girl scouts from the same troop that came on board with the project in September.

Johnny Depp The search for the new Lone Ranger is over. Not long ago we reported that Johnny Depp was set to play Tonto, the trusted companion of the most famous Ranger ever. Now, the title role belongs to Armie Hammer, who played both Winkelvoss twins in The Social Network and will soon be seen in Snow White with Julia Roberts, and Clint Eastwoods J. Edger. The Lone Ranger began as a radio show in l933, spawned movie serials and a TV series starring Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels. A l981 film version starring Klinton Spilsbury was a bust. It seems odd that the 47-year-old Depp aspired to be Tonto and not the Lone Ranger, but hes known for his off-beat role choices. Depp and the films producer, Jerry Bruckheimer, have been very successful with the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and could be planning this as a new franchise. Shooting will begin when Depp completes the new Dark Shadows movie, set for a fall 2012 release.

Agatha Christie fans, rejoice! Her favorite novel, Crooked House, never produced as a telefilm or movie, will start shooting in London this summer. The great Julie Andrews will star with Gemma Atherton, Matthew Goode and Gabriel Byrne. Crooked House is budgeted at $20 million, not a lot for a film these days, but then Agatha Christie was the best at creating one-set drawing room mysteries. Kiefer Sutherland, currently starring in That Championship Season on Broadway, will soon be shooting in Northern Ireland and New York for the film Fairytale of New York, with Kate Bosworth as his leading lady. Its about a cynical but charming Irish standup comic who, while in New York, connects with an intriguing American woman. Kiefers pilot for a new series will have to wait in the wings as a midseason replacement while he completes this film and Melancholia. As we predicted, the four TV networks have moved away from new reality shows in favor of new dramas and sitcoms. While Charlies Angels made the ABC lineup, Wonder Woman did not make NBCs fall schedule. Law & Order: SVU was unable to convince Christopher Meloni to return, and has added Jennifer Love Hewett to fill the void. Also, NBC wont restart 30 Rock until midseason due to Tina Feys pregnancy. If Tina, who created, writes, co-produces and stars in 30 Rock, wanted time off, all she had to do was ask for it. Maternity leave is an extreme way to get a vacation!

It is very rarely that an occasion is offered for doing a great deal at once. True greatness consists in being great in little things. -Charles Simmons *** So the years hang like old clothes, forgotten in the wardrobe of our minds. Did I wear that? Who was I then? -Brian Moore
