Euthanasia

The word
"euthanasia" comes Its meaning is: to take someone's life in
from the Greek order to avoid suffering, to help him or
"eu"= good and her to die well.
"thánatos" = death. Euthanasia would occur in a hospital
context, with a terminally ill patient, with
no hope of recovery and, above all, with
medical assistance.
EUTHANASIA IS LEGAL ONLY IN

Belgium
Luxembourg,
Netherlands,
Canada
the state of Victoria in Australia.
THE FOLLOWING IS REQUIRED TO PERFORM
EUTHANASIA

1. It can only be requested by

the person who wishes to
die. Neither spouses, parents nor children can do it.
2. It must be a free and repeated decision over time.
3. The ailment must be incurable and the pain
unbearable.
4. Two doctors must verify that all these requirements are
met in order to perform euthanasia or assisted suicide.
THE ESSENCE OF THE
MEDICAL PROFESSION

is to save lives rather than to cause

death, and this claim is enshrined in the
famous Hippocratic oath
HIPPOCRATIC OATH

which tells us that the physician's mission is "to do no harm, but

to help", to have the patient's health as his or her noblest goal.
WHAT TO MAKE OF THIS OBJECTION,
WHICH SEEMS EXTREMELY LOGICAL AND
CONVINCING?
is to reinterpret the Hippocratic oath in the light of a holistic
approach.
In this way, the primary purpose of the medical profession and of
the Hippocratic oath is to ensure that the patient is kept in a
biological condition to achieve a dignified life and not a miserable
one.
CONCLUSION
The Hippocratic oath must consist
fundamentally of a promise to seek
the patient's integral wellbeing and
must be based on respect for his or
her own values, the perception of his
or her quality of life within the limits
of coexistence with others.
