Reflection: Our Educational System

“Education is referred to as the process of teaching, receiving, and giving systematic instruction,
especially at a school”, Oxford Languages. The main purpose is to contribute to the learning and
development of an individual who is the student or learner.

How can the definition of education be truthful, if the education system that we are applying is
not suitable for all our learners? The illustration given, Our Education System, represents a scenario that
is evident in our current education system. In the illustration, there are animals that represent the
different types of students and the one who gives instruction is the teacher. According to Albert
Einstein, everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life
believing that it is stupid. Every animal that is shown in the picture represents a different level of
knowledge, skills, talents, and ability. That is, in the picture, the teacher instructs his students, for a fair
selection, everybody has to take the same exam: please climb that tree. How can a fish climb in a tree?
It's impossible, it is what Einstein is talking about. It is the system or the instruction that makes the
problem of our education. As a future educator, it is my responsibility to promote my assessments to
students that are allowing my students their own creativity and critical thinking skills. It is a reminder
that every student is unique and should be dealt with proper assessment.
