YOUR SALARY

INTRODUCTION
According to a Global Knowledge report, the more IT certifications you have, the higher the paycheck.

While certifications do demand both time and money, IT professionals aren’t hesitating to get certifications
because they realize the value. In North America, for example, an individual with at least six IT certifica-
tions makes $10,000 more than those with just one, according to the report.

Certifications aren’t limited to the employee, but are also good for the organization as a whole. By gaining
additional skills, employees are better at closing skills gaps, meeting client requirements, productivity, and
completing projects quicker.

What are the most popular certifications for IT professionals? Which certifications will help IT pros
earn the most? What certifications do employees want potential employers to have? Find out in this
TechRepublic ebook.

CompTIA has new certification testing

options, which allow for remote examina-
tions, according to a press release. Rather than
visiting an in-person testing center, students
can instead take exams virtually from their
homes, whenever they want.

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, social distancing

has become critical to slowing and preventing
further spread of the disease. Most organiza-
tions have transitioned in-office employees to
remote workers, banned international travel, and IMAGE: ISTOCKPHOTO/ RIDOFRANZ
canceled major events.

Partnering with Pearson VUE, the skills certifications and training provider is opting for remote exams to
accomplish the same goal: Keeping individuals healthy and safe.

Research has shown that the more IT certifications one has, the higher their paycheck probably is. While
spending more time at home, professionals can now continue elevating their education through virtual
training and certifications on CompTIA.

“Social distancing, indeterminate business hours, and other disruptions to normalcy caused by the corona-
virus pandemic have made it impractical, if not impossible, for the foreseeable future for the large majority
of individuals to take their exams at a brick-and-mortar school or test center,” Todd Thibodeaux, president
and CEO of CompTIA, said in the release.

The remote testing option will be made available in about 30 days, but will be available indefinitely, the release
said. Additionally, CompTIA announced that it is extending the expiration date on certification exam vouchers.

Exam vouchers with an initial expiration date between March 17, 2020, and April 30, 2020, will be valid
through June 30, 2020, allowing for greater flexibility during this time of uncertainty.

11 POPULAR IT CERTIFICATIONS AND

CROSS-CERTIFICATIONS THAT PAY
THE MOST
Find out which are in demand worldwide, and which IT cross-certifications are beneficial.
BY MACY BAYERN
Certifications are critical to keeping tech skills
current, but cross-certifying skills carries the
ultimate value, according to a recent Global
Knowledge study.

Cybersecurity certifications are the most popular

worldwide: 27% of respondents said they have
a cyber certification and another 25% said they
plan to pursue one this year. These certifications
are often bolstered when cross-certified with
other skills, resulting in a nice pay bump, the
report found.

“When you’re able to show that you have a

IMAGE: ISTOCKPHOTO/ RIDOFRANZ
validated understanding of the technology you work
with, what it does, how it can help a business be
more successful, you are going to be a very attractive
candidate to either a potential employer or your existing employer,” said Zane Schweer, lead researcher for
Global Knowledge’s IT Skills and Salary report.

The report established that more certifications translates into more money and success, as reported in previous
TechRepublic coverage, but the report also highlighted the most popular certifications in the IT world.

MOST POPULAR IT CERTIFICATIONS

While the following certifications were the most popular according to survey respondents, Schweer said that
these certifications aren’t necessarily easy to attain for IT professionals starting their careers.

“Some of these certifications require years of experience,” Schweer said. “You can’t go get the certification

TOP IT CERTIFICATIONS TO INCREASE YOUR SALARY

and then expect to get that salary. You have to have that wisdom that you’ve gained from those years of
experience and apply that knowledge to certification exams.”

For those experienced professionals, these certifications appeared to be the most prevalent.

1. Cybersecurity
Cybersecurity was listed as the most popular certification globally. In North America, the top cybersecurity
certification was CISS, while CISA dominated all other regions. ISACA’s CISM and CRISC were also ranked
in the top five in popularity across regions, the report found.

This report has been conducted formally for 13 years, and cybersecurity remains a top performer in certifi-
cations every year, according to Schweer.

“That’s because when you turn on the news, you’re hearing about another cyber security attack or the latest
hack. And these are detrimental to how a business operates,” Schweer said.

“I mean the payouts, the decrease in brand equity, the bad publicity--whatever you can do to help mitigate
that risk and protect, your customers, your employees and everybody that’s involved with your organization
is paramount,” he said.

With data and personal information becoming more digitized, it also becomes easier to transfer that infor-
mation, which means people have to take greater measures to protect that content, Schweer noted.

In today’s cybersecurity, “it’s not machines attacking machines. It’s people attacking people. And since it
changes so quickly, because technology is changing so quickly, there’s always going to be that demand and
drive for continuously earning the latest and greatest cybersecurity certification,” Schweer said.

2. ITIL
ITIL Foundation is the second most popular IT service management certification in North America. The
majority (93%) of ITIL professionals in North America have this certification, along with 95% of ITIL pros
in Latin America.

ITIL has been a tried and true certification for decades, making its appearance on the list unsurprising,
Schweer said.

“It’s almost like a rite of passage for IT professionals,” Schweer said. “ITIL is a collection of best practices
around IT service management and how IT departments serve both their internal customers, stakeholders
and their external customers.

7

TOP IT CERTIFICATIONS TO INCREASE YOUR SALARY

“Whether it’s through continuous development or just how [a business] operates between departments, both
within IT and then outside of IT, it’s important to have that [ITIL] understanding,” he said.

3. CompTIA
CompTIA is a popular resource for IT training and certifications. Within CompTIA, Security+, A+, and
Network+ were the most popular worldwide, the report found.

In North America, the majority (62%) have their Security+ certifications, more than any region, which is
just more evidence as to how popular cybersecurity certifications are.

4. Project management
While the appearance of project management on this list may appear strange at first glance, Schweer said
that it is not surprising at all. Project management certifications have a significant staying power, remaining
on Global Knowledge’s list for years, he added.

“As the room for error continues to get down to zero, with all this money being spent on technology invest-
ments or whatever initiative a company’s going through, project management is so important because you
have to have all the players on the same page,” Schweer said.

The top two project management certifications in North America were PMP (57%) and Certified
ScrumMaster (29%). In other regions, Prince2 Foundation was more popular, ranking No. 1 in EMEA and
No. 2 in Asia-Pacific, the report found.

5. Red Hat
Red Hat certifications were also popular on the list, particularly in North America. Within that region,
Certified System Administrator (33%), LPIC-1 (26%), Certified Engineer (18%) and Linux Essentials (18%)
were listed at the top, according to the report.

6. Google Cloud
With cloud computing gaining ground in the enterprise, Google Cloud’s presence on the list is expected. The
most popular Google Cloud certifications across regions were GCP Cloud Architect, GCP Data Engineer
and GCP Associate Engineer, the report found.

7. Microsoft
Some 16% of survey respondents held Microsoft certifications, with the retired Microsoft Certified
Professional (MCP) and Microsoft Certified Trainer (MCT) as two of the most popular, the report found.

8

In North America, 20% of Microsoft-certified professionals said they hold MCSE: Server Infrastructure, and
19% said they hold MCSA: WIndows Server 2008, according to the report.

8. Cisco
Some 16% of all IT professionals professionals have Cisco certifications, according to the report. For
Cisco-certified staff, the report cited the most certifications in CCNA Routing and Switching (71%),
CCNP Routing and Switching (33%), CCNA Security (18%), CCENT: Cisco Certified Entry Networking
Technician (15%). And CCDA: Cisco Certified Design Associate.

9. Citrix
Citrix was particularly popular in North America. The top certifications were Citrix Certified Associate-
Virtualization (CCA-V) (53%), Citrix Certified Associate-Networking (CCA-N) (32%), and Citrix Certified
Professional-Virtualization (CCP-V) (32%), according to the report.

10. VMware
VMware certifications were popular across regions. In North America, Asia-Pacific and Latin America,
more than 27% of VMware-certified professionals said they held VMware Certified Associate 6 - Data
Center Virtualization (VCA6-DCV).

In EMEA, the most common VMware certification was VMware Certified Professional 5 - Data Center
Virtualization (VCP5-DCV), the report found.

11. AWS
Among AWS-certified professionals, the most commonly held certifications were AWS Certified
Solutions Architect-Associate (72%), AWS Certified Developer-Associate (33%), AWS Certified SysOps
Administrator-Associate (24%), and AWS Certified Solutions Architect-Professional (16%), according to
the report.

In North America, AWS became particularly valuable when cross-certified with other certifications. This
strategy gave IT professionals significant salary boosts, the report found.

TOP-PAYING CERTIFICATIONS WORLDWIDE

The report also outlined the highest-paying certifications around the world.
1. AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional ($120,136)
2. GCP Cloud Architect ($118,756)
3. CISSP ($116,573)
4. GCP Data Engineer ($114,888)
5. AWS Certified SysOps Administrator - Associate ($114,800)
6. TOGAF 9.1 ($111,984)
7. Project Management Professional ($111,196)
8. AWS Certified Developer - Associate ($111,178)
9. AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate ($110,429)
10. GCP Associate Cloud Engineer ($106,044)

While these salaries are already impressive, employees are be paid even more if they cross-certify their skills,
the report found.

Cross-certifications
Salaries for North American IT professionals increased by more than 2% with each additional certification
earned, according to the report. This success was particularly seen with the addition of AWS certifications.

“What we’ve seen is if you don’t have any AWS certifications and then you add an AWS certification and
move into that area with those certifications you already have, you’re positioning yourself for a higher
salary,” Schweer said.

“That’s because cloud computing has roared onto the scene in the past decade,” Schweer said. “These cloud
architects and cloud engineers who are designing and building these companies systems and infrastructures
are foundational components of an organization.”

“If you don’t have the right people there, then you’re on a sandy foundation that could easily wash away,”
Schweer noted. “That’s why we noticed that when you move into cloud —particularly AWS because AWS is the
leading provider in the cloud space right now—that those skills are highly sought after.”

The report identified the changes in salary between regular certifications, and those cross certified with AWS.

HIGHEST SALARIES
The more certifications you have, the higher your paycheck, according to Global Knowledge.

BY MACY BAYERN
The more IT certifications, the higher the paycheck, according to a Global Knowledge report. That’s a good
thing, because 85% of respondents said they hold at least one additional certification.

Of that 85%, more than half said they

earned their most recent certification
in the past 12 months, and 66% said
they are already pursuing their next
certification or plan to this year. Global
Knowledge’s 2019 IT Skills and Salary
Report highlighted the importance
of continuing education. As the tech
world evolves, employees must do the
same to remain relevant and compet-
itive in their jobs.

“Certifications show that you have the

breadth and depth of expertise and
that you are committed to continuously learning,”
said Zane Schweer, lead researcher on the report. “Say you just had one certification in entry level field, such
as entry level cloud certification. Well, cloud changes all the time. Your career is changing all the time. Your
job roles are changing all the time.”

The more certifications you have, the more well-versed you are in those topics, which is appealing to
employers, Schweer said.

While certifications do demand both time and money, IT professionals aren’t hesitating to get certifications
because they realize the value. The benefits of these certifications also aren’t limited to the employee, but are
also good for the organization as a whole, Schweer said.

INDIVIDUAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL BENEFITS OF

CERTIFICATIONS
Across the world, salaries of certified professionals surpassed those of non-certified, the report found.

The largest salary difference was in Latin America, with a 21% discrepancy between certified and non-cer-
tified staff, followed by Asia-Pacific (11%), and North America (7%).

The more certifications an employee has, the higher they are paid. In North America, for example, an individual with
at least six IT certifications makes $10,000 more than those with just one, according to the report.

Increased salary wasn’t the only benefit employees saw: More than half (52%) said their expertise is more
sought after within their organization upon gaining certifications.

Some 45% of respondents with certifications said they have implemented their efficiencies and 43% said
they are faster at their jobs, the report found.

These individual benefits transfer into benefits for an organization. By gaining skills, employees are better at
closing skills gaps, meeting client requirements, productivity, and completing projects quicker, according to
the report.

The most popular certifications were in cybersecurity, based on the amount of CISSP, CISA, CISM, and
CRISC certifications across regions. With the number of public cybersecurity breaches in 2019, along with
mounting rise of malware and ransomware, cybersecurity certifications are lucrative.

CISCO RETOOLS CCNA, CCNP AND

CCIE, ADDS DEVNET ASSOCIATE AND
PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATIONS
Updated for the latest technologies and job roles, these certifications are geared toward network
engineers and software developers.

BY MACY BAYERN
Cisco announced upgrades to its certification and training program on Monday. The program now features
Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), and Cisco
Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) written exams, as well as brand new Cisco DevNet Associate Cisco
DevNet Professional exams, according
to a blog post.

Certifications are sweeping the IT

enterprise, with 85% of professionals
earning their most recent certifi-
cation in the last 12 months, a Global
Knowledge report found. These certi-
fications not only help sharpen IT
skills, but can earn these professionals
more money and sought-after jobs.

“Certifications have been a way to

validate yourself to others,” said
Joe Clarke, distinguished services

engineer at Cisco. “It’s a door opener;
it says, ‘I have achieved this level.’”

Candidates who have certifications on their resume are displaying that they have up-to-date skills and can
demonstrate those skills, which is appealing for hiring managers, Clarke said.

As a major certification provider for the past 26 years, Cisco attempts to offer the most relevant certifica-
tions that reflect the evolving tech landscape. With networking significantly

shifting over the past few years, the company said it decided it was time to reflect those changes in
its certifications.

“This huge trend around software-defined networking permeated its way into everything,” Clarke said. “We
have a software-defined data centers, then ACI (Application Centric Infrastructure), and then we had this
whole push towards software-defined WAN, and now software-defined access layer networks.

“It’s not enough anymore just to do these incremental, evolutionary steps,” Clarke noted. “The fact that the
network engineer has to be more software-aware and embrace more software.”

UPDATED CISCO CERTIFICATIONS

CCNA
The updated CCNA program helps prepare associate-level IT professionals for a successful career in
networking by adding security, automation and programmability to the course. The certification also covers
network fundamentals, network access, IP connectivity, and IP services.

Before the update, Cisco had 10 different CCNA tracks. This new CCNA certification presents a unified,
single version of those 10 originals, while incorporating modern skills employers look for in networking
engineers, Clarke said.

“We started asking hiring managers, what is it you really expect from an associate-level professional? We
found that they wanted someone who was a little broader in networking, someone who could be a little
more malleable in different areas of the network,” Clarke said.

“The new, single CCNA focuses on routing and switching; it focuses on security, because security is so
integral to networking; and, we wanted to start to introduce those fundamentals of programming and
automation, because any network that’s being at scale is going to get back candidate,” Clarke added.

CCNP
The CCNP is a more advanced version of a CCNA, geared toward more experienced network engineers,
who want to bolster their skills and look ahead, Clarke said.

Within the Cisco courses, professionals at this level can choose between five tracks to focus on, including
enterprise, collaboration, data center, security, or service provider.

“The new Cisco NP has two exams. They used to have varying numbers of exams depending on the track,”
Clarke said. The first exam taps into the student’s specialized track, and the other is a technology core

foundation applied across all five tracks.”

“You don’t need any prerequisites anymore,” Clarke said. “If I jumped in and I go from my, let’s say, CCNP
Enterprise, I’ll walk out of that with three certifications: Two specialists, one for the technology core and my
concentration, and the CCNP.”

CCIE
The CCIE is the expert-level certification for network engineers, also offering the five specialty tracks
included on NP.

The previous IE certification had a written component, but the new certification includes the same
technology core offered for the NP to serve as the foundational exam, Clarke said.

“However, whereas in NP I could take either the concentration or the core first, in IE, I must first pass the
technology core in a given technology space and then I can go and sit for an eight-hour lab,” Clarke said.

“The new eight- hour lab consists of a three-hour low-level design component upfront, a situation or
scenario-based design, and then five hours of implementation, operation, optimization, and trouble-
shooting,” he added.

“We wanted to thread software through every one of our certifications for the network engineer,” Clarke
said. “It’s critical that the network engineer now embrace software as a means of delivering reliable, likable,
scalable network solutions.”

Cisco DevNet Associate

The new DevNet Associate certification validates the emerging skills of software developers, DevOps
engineers, automation specialists, and other software professionals.

The associate-level program requires one exam and focuses on understanding and using APIs, Cisco
platforms and development, application development and security, and infrastructure and automation,
Clarke said.

Cisco DevNet Professional

The DevNet Professional is the more advanced certification, helping developers master design and
debugging with Cisco APIs and platforms.

“The Professional [certification] structurally looks just like the network engineer [certification]: You have a
core exam and a number of concentrations,” Clarke said.

“This person might very well be a team leader of software development; they have five or more years of
experience designing and developing software,” Clarke added.

All programs are currently available for enrollment, however, the CCIE lab exam centers are temporarily
closed, in light of the coronavirus outbreak.

“The unprecedented workplace complexity and unique challenges organizations are facing require us to
re-tool how talent is deployed and activated both locally and globally,” he said. “As many teams are now
working remotely, organizations and individuals are establishing new ways of working and developing
different power skills--like greater communication, more emotional intelligence, and empathy. The recent
rapid switch to virtual work is surely going to impact how work gets done in the future, and we will need to
apply the best practices of project management to shape how we manage work.”

Project management skills can be extremely beneficial during times of emergency such as the pandemic, he
said. “Project management initiatives play an important role in preparing for these types of disruptions. All
work is accomplished through programs and projects, and project managers are used to changing methods
and approaches.”

By learning processes to adapt to change, business leaders and workers can be ready to pivot as needed in
any situation, he said. “One of PMI’s main areas of focus has been and will continue to be helping enter-
prises and individuals navigate big change and disruption, as well as new ways of working. We are seeing our
network take steps now to adapt to work as remote and virtual teams, but also prepare for what is ahead. We
know that projects will help be a catalyst to the ultimate recovery.”

For business leaders, learning and practicing and collaborative leadership skills is essential amid the current
crisis, said DePrisco. “Practice emotional intelligence and empathy--it will go a long way in keeping virtual
teams connected and productive during this transitional period.”

PMI offers eight certifications in project management, including the Project Management Professional
(PMP) certification.
