V.03 ___ pág.4

1) E.coli strain (CECT 516)
Symptoms and clinical manifestations
Escherichia coli (also known as E. coli) is an example of a bacterium that is present in large quantities
in our normal human and animal gut microbiota, where it is generally not harmful. However, in other
parts of the body, E. coli can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, with severe
clinical conditions such as urinary tract infections, bacteremia, and meningitis.

Symptoms usually appear between one and eight days.

Source of contamination
Transmission of pathogenic E. coli through water has been proven in recreational waters and contami-
nated drinking water. For example, the drinking water supply may be contaminated because rainwater
containing livestock excrement has leaked out.

2) EP.aeruginosa (CECT 108)

Symptoms and clinical manifestations
Pseudomonas aeruginosa can cause many types of infections, but it rarely causes serious illness in
people without risk factors, such as cystic fibrosis or immunosuppressed patients. The bacteria predo-
minantly colonize damaged sites such as burns and surgical wounds, the respiratory tract of people
with underlying illnesses, and physically damaged eyes. From these locations, the infection can spread
throughout the body, causing destructive lesions or septicemia and meningitis. Mild manifestations
include folliculitis and water-related ear infections after exposure to hot and humid environments such
as pools and spas.

Source of contamination
P. aeruginosa is a common environmental microorganism and can be found in feces, soil, and water,
especially wastewater. Like Legionella it can multiply in aquatic environments and also on the surface
of certain organic materials in contact with water. It has been insulated from a variety of humid environ-
ments such as sinks, water baths, hot water systems, showers, and spa pools. Ingestion of drinking
water is not a major source of infection, although it can be associated with changes in taste, odor, and
cloudiness.

3) Enterococcus faecalis (CECT 481)

Enterococcus faecalis and E. faecium cause a variety of infections, including endocarditis, urinary and
intra-abdominal infections, prostatitis, cellulitis, and wound infections, as well as concurrent bactere-
mia. Enterococci are part of the normal intestinal flora.

Symptoms, fever, chills and body aches.

Weakness or dizziness. Urinating more often than usual or painful urination. Urine that smells bad, or
blood in the urine.
Pain or cramps in the abdomen.
