• P12.3: In the Periodic Table, elements are arranged according to the

number of protons (called the atomic number). This organization illustrates
commonality and patterns of physical and chemical properties among the
elements.

• P12.6: An atom's electron configuration, particularly of the outermost

electrons, determines how the atom can interact with other atoms. The
interactions between atoms that hold them together in molecules or between
oppositely charged ions are called chemical bonds.

Text of ISTE Standards for Students that your lesson will address:

• ISTE 1a. Students articulate and set personal learning goals, develop
strategies leveraging technology to achieve them and reflect on the learning
process itself to improve learning outcomes.
• ISTE 1c. Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and
improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

• ISTE 2b. Students engage in positive, safe, legal and ethical behavior
when using technology, including social interactions online or when using
networked devices.
• ISTE 3d. build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and
problems, developing ideas and theories, and pursuing answers and solutions.
• ISTE 7a. a. use digital tools to connect with learners from a variety of
backgrounds and cultures, engaging with them in ways that broaden mutual
understanding and learning.

Objectives - Students will be able to recognize elements on the periodic table.

- Students will be familiar with the periodic table's sub-groups.
- Students will be able to calculate the number of protons, neutrons, and
electrons in each element.
- Students will be able to recognize each element's atomic symbol, number,
and mass.

Differentiation This is a lesson designed for a small group setting. A smaller group will allow
Strategies for more one-on-one instruction if needed. These students are visual and
auditory learners, so I have incorporated a lot of graphics and videos. My
students also learn best with constant interaction. So, there is opportunity to
interact throughout each section of the lesson.

Engagement First: Introduction of Lesson and overview of activities and technology

Students will use Chromebooks for most of the lesson.
Activity 1: Introduction to Periodic Table Kahoot

897c819ec444_1654657508885
Students will play this intro Kahoot in class. They will only answer the first 6
questions. This is just a way to introduce the students to some of the vocabulary
and things that they will learn in the lesson. Some of the students will know the
answers based on their prior knowledge. This is only an opener, so accuracy is
not as important at this point.

Activity 2: Periodic Table BrainPOP (YouTube)

https://youtu.be/-d-xUJN--Ss
Students will watch this four-minute video to introduce them to the periodic table.

Students will list what they already knew about the periodic table and what they
learned from the video. We will then discuss these responses together.

Exploration Activity 1: Tiny Tap Periodic Table Activity

https://www.tinytap.com/activities/gxqe/play/the-periodic-table-of-elements
Students will visit the Tiny Tap site and explore the interactive periodic table. The
table introduces each group (metals, nonmetals, etc.). Each student will be given
a group on the periodic table to focus on and talk about with their peers. The
interactive periodic table has a follow-up quiz that will require students to use the
periodic table aid on the smartboard.

Exploration The interactive periodic table has a follow-up quiz that will require students to
Assessment use the periodic table aid on the smartboard. The students must either find the
symbol, atomic number, or identity of the given element.

This Nearpod presentation allows the students to interact with the lesson on the
Smart Board. The students will follow along with me on their Chromebooks. The
Nearpod contains notes, questions, and interactive activities.

Explanation 2:
Nearpod Atomic Symbols Presentation

Interactive presentation that will be used to show students how to identify
elements by protons, electrons, and neutrons.

Explanation I'll go through the answers with the students to make sure they understand
Assessment what's being asked. Quiz questions are included in the Nearpod. On the
Nearpod, I will have access to all of the kids' responses.

Elaboration Periodic Element Wanted Poster Project

Students must select an element from the periodic table. They will create wanted
poster for this element. A wanted poster usually has all of a person or thing’s

the element’s name, symbol, atomic number, and etc. Students will use
