Using podcast for EFL students in language learning

English is a compulsory subject in Indonesia Mukarrama et al. (2015). English has

several skills, among which the most important is listening skills. However, listening is
always considered as a big challenge for learners because they often face difficulties in
understanding meaning or meaning. Podcasts can be used to overcome this as a support for
listening learning. A podcast is an audio recording published on the internet and designated
as a learning resource. The media is very useful in the learning process because of the
interest of the students, even so there are also weaknesses that arise.

One of the strongest arguments is that podcasts provide several benefits for students,
namely podcasts can attract students' attention through various content Nikolou and Darra
(2018) . Which is a lot of positive content that can improve listening skills and motivate
students' . In addition, podcasts appeal to students and allow them to interact in English in the
classroom. In fact, it turns out that male students are more interested in using podcasts as a
medium than female students. Meanwhile, female students are satisfied with using podcasts.
Therefore, it can be concluded that podcasts can be easily incorporated into the curriculum
and once the content is deemed appropriate, podcasts can improve student performance.1

Although there are a number of arguments that speak of the advantages of using
podcasts, there are also disadvantages when using podcasts. Actually, internet connection
problems and difficulties in filtering content are the main problems for podcast users
Traphagan et al. (2010) . In addition, this media can have a negative impact on the level of

attention of students in class. Therefore, when using podcasts, teachers must be involved and
accompany students.

I would like to say that podcasts are very useful in learning activities because they not
only help students master listening skills, but also motivate students. Besides, podcasts are
more interesting to use than other media. Therefore, in Indonesia, podcasts are recommended
to be used as learning innovations. However, teachers must play a full role in the learning
process, and need to be prepared carefully before starting learning. Such as not letting
students' attention be distracted, checking internet connections and filtering podcasts that will
be used. It should be remembered that this media does not replace the role of the teacher at
all, only as a supporting tool.
