 CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

As we know, most students don't like English lessons. The classic reason is that English

is difficult and not very important. Whereas in the world of work later, English is needed. As my

experience at school starting from elementary school, middle school, high school I was not too

serious in English lessons, because in my opinion for learning English. But after going to

college, I just realized how important it is to learn English. But it is not entirely wrong students

are not interested in learning English, teachers also need to correct or examine what is wrong and

less when teaching class, so students become not interested in learning English. In my opinion an

interesting way to teach English today is to use media that are already sophisticated ang

interesting.

By using interesting media such as animated images or videos that are easier to

understand, or by directly practicing lessons together in the classroom so that students are not

bored and not strained in learning. Can also use ice breaking which is interesting so that the

learning atmosphere becomes more fun. The material is adapted to the level of students being

taught. In presenting the material, it is not only monotonous in books, but also with some media

that is more easily absorbed by students.

As teachers and prospective teachers we must also understand how our students' learning

styles in the classroom such as; visual, auditory or kinesthetic. We cannot force the learning style

we want but the learning outcomes are not optimal.

1.2 Identification of the Problem

I got a teacher who taught at SMAN 4 Muaro Jambi, the problem the teacher faced when

teaching was, how to make students interested in English lessons, but until now the results were

zero. So the teacher increases their grades by looking at their attitudes while learning in class.

Then the value obtained is quite high.

 Formulation of the problem

1. How to adapt learning media to students so students can be interested in English lessons?

2. How to improve students' creativity in learning English in the classroom?

3. Does outside the classroom keep students to improving their ability in English?

4. How to maintain students' interest in English lessons?

1.3 Limitation of the Research

Create media or provide learning media that can attract students with English subjects.

Like the online game Quizizz, HotPotatos and others. Provides little material, but many students

have to be creative with the expertise they have with their preferred learning style.
1.4 Aim of Thesis

To find out what media students are most interested in learning English, which can

increase students' interest in learning English and also improve their ability to speak English and

be able to use it well. Also intended for teachers or prospective teachers who will teach so as not

to be monotonous when teaching and teachers or prospective teachers can use other media

besides books that make students bored and uninterested, the teacher can use this proposal as a

reference for teaching that is more interesting. Hardware that can be used by teacher to teach

sucuh as, computer, laptops, speakers, infocus and others. Software like, Power Point, Microsoft

Word, Canva, Prezi, Kahoot, Edmodo, Hot Pottatos, Quizizz and others. I will discuss more

deeply in chapter 2.
 CHAPTER 2

2.1 Definition of media

The teacher's role is to provide, demonstrate, guide and motivate students so they can

interact with various learning resources available. Not only learning resources in the form of

people, but also other learning resources. Not only learning resources are deliberately designed

for learning purposes, but also learning resources that are available. We can find all the learning

resources, we choose and use them as learning resources for our students. Interaction between

students and learning resources can vary. How to learn by listening to lectures from the teacher is

indeed one form of these interactions. But learning just by listening alone, its effectiveness

should be doubted. Learning will only be effective if the learner is given many opportunities to

do something, through multi methods and multi media. Through a variety of learning methods

and media, students will be able to interact more actively by utilizing all the potential students

have.

Gagne defines the media as a type of component in the student environment that can

stimulate them to learn. In line with that, Briggs interpreted the media as a tool to provide

incentives for students to make the learning process happen. Educational media, of course the

media used in the process and to achieve educational goals. In essence the educational media is

also a communication media, because the education process is also a communication process.

According to Heinich, Molenida, and Russel (1993) argue that "technology or learning

media as a scientific application of the learning process in humans in the practical task of

teaching and learning. According to Ali (1992) argues that "Media are various types of

components in the student environment that can provide stimuli for learning". According to
Gagne (1990) argues that "Media-based conditions include the types of presentations delivered

to students by scheduling, sorting and organizing. According to Miarso (2004) argues that

"Learning media are all things that are used to channel messages and can stimulate the mind,

feelings, attention, and willingness of the learning so that it can encourage the learning process".

Thus it can be concluded that the media are all physical tools that can present messages and

stimulate students to learn such as films, books and tapes.

 The function of learning media are:

To realize an effective learning situation - The use of media is an internal part of the

learning system. - Important learning media in order to achieve learning objectives. - The use of

media in learning is to accelerate the learning process and help students in their efforts to

understand the material presented by the teacher in class. - The use of media in learning is

intended to enhance the quality of education.

 Types of Learning Media Grouping

The types of learning media are delivered by many learning media experts, including

Asra (2007: 5.8-5.9) classifying learning media into several types, namely:

a. Visual media are media that can only be seen, such as photos, pictures and posters.

b. Audio media is media that can only be heard just like audio cassettes, MP3s, and radios.

c. Audio visual media is media that can be seen and heard at the same time as sound films,

videos, television and sound slides.

d. Multimedia is a media that can present complete media elements such as sound, animation,

video, graphics and film.

e. Realia media are all real media in the natural environment, such as plants, rocks, water, rice

fields, and so on.

 The grouping of types of instructional media is also expressed by Ashar (2011: 44-

45), namely:

a. Visual media, namely the type of media used, only relies on the senses of sight, for example

print media such as books, journals, maps, pictures, and so on.

b. Audio media is a type of media used that only relies on hearing, for example a tape recorder

and radio.

c. Audio-visual media are films, videos, TV programs, and so on.

d. Multimedia is media that involves several types of media and equipment in an integrated

manner in a learning process or activity.

2.2 Method of study

The first method I did was to interview the teacher. Then I ask what are the problems

encountered while teaching class and what are the efforts of the teacher in increasing the

attractiveness of students with English lessons and improving students' ability to speak English.

Then I looked for ways to help the teacher in solving the problems he was facing. I look back

when I was in high school, I remember what I had experienced while studying English in class

and what was lacking and made us bored studying English. Then I got the answer, namely, the

lack of media to help students be interested and enjoy learning English. Not only using books,

but teachers can explain material with more interesting media, for example, interesting Power

Points, using Canva, Templet or Prezi. Then can give assignments to students with interesting
applications such as Edmodo, Kahoot and others. Teachers can also invite students to learn by

using online game applications such as Quizizz or offline ones such as HotPotattous. After I get

the method and method, I will first introduce to the teacher and will practice this, whether it has

succeeded in making students interested in learning, whether their English grades have improved

and whether their ability in English has improved.

2.3 Review releted to literature

There are several media that teachers can use in teaching English. The opinion of Nana

Sudjana and Ahmad Rivai (1991: 2) that the benefits of media in learning are: "First, learning

will attract students more so that it can foster student motivation. Second, the learning material

will be clearer in meaning so that it can be better understood by students and enables students to

achieve learning goals better. Third, students have more learning activities because not only

listen to the description of the teacher but also other activities such as do, demonstrate, etc.

According to Heinich, et al (1996) in his book "Instructional Technology and Media for

Learning" states that the media are communication channel tool. Media comes from Latin and is

a plural form of the word "medium" which literally means "intermediary" that is the intermediary

source of the message (a source) with the recipient of the message (a receiver). Next given

examples of these media such as films, television, diagrams, printed materials, computers and

instructors. Examples of such media can be considered as media learning if you carry messages

(messages) in order to achieve the learning objectives.Learning media can be regarded as a

messenger technology used for learning purposes.

Media series pictures (pictures series), flash cards, puppets (puppets), dolls (dolls). To use

technology educators can download narrative videos from YouTube. In addition to downloading
from YouTube, teachers can also show dramas, narrative stories that have been sold freely in the

form of VCDs and DVDs. For higher creativity, the teacher can assign students to create a play

project (drama assignment) which of course can be used as a medium for learning narrative text.

English language newspapers such as the Jakarta Post, Times, Daily News, New Straits Times,

etc. For magazines teachers can use English-language magazines such as Hello, English version

Digest, etc. Teachers can also record news broadcasts via CNN broadcasts, Radio Australia,

BBC London, etc. For high technology, it can be downloaded via YouTube, English language

news broadcasts from television stations such as The Indonesian Channel (TIC), Metro TV,

BuzzFeed, VICE News, BBC News, VOA, etc. Website and website provider of free and latest

films such as Ganool, Ganoolid, Icinema3satu, Indomoviemania, Khemju, Downloadmaniak,

Indofiles, Moviedetector, Sharingseries, EZTV, etc. The teacher can also download the trailer

(footage) of the films for a shorter duration. After showing the film or the trailer students will

more easily understand the review text that has been presented in the package book. to improve

students' vocabulary mastery (vocabulary) such as; snake and ladder, card, flash card, scrabble,

picture, puzzle, or realia. The media can be applied in the form of interesting games. Examples

3.1 Conclusions

By using interesting media such as animated images or videos that are easier to

understand, or by directly practicing lessons together in the classroom so that students are not

bored and not strained in learning. Can also use ice breaking which is interesting so that the

learning atmosphere becomes more fun. The material is adapted to the level of students being

taught. In presenting the material, it is not only monotonous in books, but also with some media

teacher but also other activities such as observing, doing, demonstrating, and so on.

So there is no harm in a teacher or prospective teacher using existing media to teach in

the classroom. Today, not only teachers and books are used as learning media, but also electronic

media, while not being excessive. Because electronic media, both hardware and software are

very helpful in improving students' ability to speak English. Students can also actively

participate in the learning process in the classroom, the learning process is not monotonous,

students will be interested by themselves in English. They enjoy hours of English lessons. The

teacher frees students in being creative in learning with the skills and media that are suitable for

them.
