Unit 2

EPISODE 1
[Mark and Amanda are in the Round up studio.]
AMANDA: Welcome to ‘Round up’. Today’s big story is, well, stories!
MARK: Almost everybody has a favourite story. It could be a book, a film or even a song. What’s your favourite
story, Amanda?
AMANDA: Well, I really like fantasy and I think the best fantasy story is J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. It’s a
very dramatic story, full of brave heroes, terrifying monsters, and spectacular battles. You read it too,
didn’t you Mark?
MARK: Yes … but I found it a bit disappointing.
AMANDA: Oh really? Why?
MARK: I thought the plot was too complicated … and there were too many characters. I prefer the stories of
Roald Dahl. Roald Dahl was born in Wales in 1916. He went to boarding school, but he didn’t like all of
his teachers. In fact, one or two of them are the villains in his stories! When he left school he went to
Africa. Then World War II started. Dahl joined the air force and became a fighter pilot. There was never
a dull moment! After the war Roald Dahl became a writer. He wrote lots of magical stories like Charlie
and the Chocolate Factory, Danny the Champion of the World and The BFG – The Big, Friendly Giant.
He really believed in the magic of storytelling and created imaginary worlds full of fantastic characters.
He even invented his own words! They are less realistic, but they are very entertaining! My favourite is
The Twits. It’s about a horrible old couple. They play nasty tricks on their pets and their neighbours. But
the pets and neighbours get their revenge! It’s hilarious!
AMANDA: Great choice, I love The Twits too! OK, now it’s time for today’s competition. Are you ready?
[The question appears on the screen. Each answer flashes as Amanda says it.]
AMANDA: Which thing did Roald Dahl NOT do?
Become a teacher, write stories, work as a fighter pilot, go to Africa.
Click to choose your answer.
[Students can select the answer. The following options depend on the students’ choices.]
[Option 1]
AMANDA: That’s right – Roald Dahl didn’t become a teacher.
[Option 2]
AMANDA: Sorry, the correct answer is that he didn’t become a teacher!
MARK: Well, that’s it for today. Bye!
AMANDA: Bye!

EPISODE 2
[Amanda is on a stage with Ellie, a young actress who specializes in telling stories.]
AMANDA: Hi there! I’m with Ellie Bradshaw. Ellie, you’re an actress, aren’t you?
ELLIE: Yes, but I don’t usually act in plays or TV programmes, I tell stories!
AMANDA: Are they your own stories?
ELLIE: No, I usually tell other people’s stories. I tell fairy tales, old adventure stories, or just funny stories that
happened to other people!
AMANDA: And, who do you tell them to?
ELLIE: I tell a lot of children’s stories so often I go to schools or parties. And sometimes people come to listen
to me telling stories here.
AMANDA: So, how do you tell these stories? I’ve heard that it’s much more difficult that it looks.
ELLIE: It is! You need to be very energetic and entertaining. But it’s a lot of fun.
AMANDA: Can you teach me how to do it?

Unit 2
ELLIE: Sure. But first I’ve got a few choices for you. Would you prefer to tell an adventure story or a love
story?
AMANDA: Oh … I’d rather tell an adventure story.
ELLIE: OK. And what kind of character would you like to be? Would you prefer to be a villain?
AMANDA: Er… no, I’d rather not …
ELLIE: How about a hero?
AMANDA: That sounds much better than a villain!
ELLIE: And would you like to wear a costume?
AMANDA: I’d love to!
ELLIE: Great! Right, I’ve got the perfect story for you and I want you to practise telling it.
AMANDA: OK! But while I’m practising, it’s back to you Mark … .
[Back to studio.]
MARK: I’m looking forward to hearing your story, Amanda! Now it’s your turn to talk.
[Ellie appears on the screen.]
MARK: Ellie is going to give you two story choices. Click to pause if you want more time. Click the audio button
to listen again.
ELLIE: Hello. Let’s pick a story. Would you prefer to tell a detective story or an adventure story?

AMANDA: Once upon a time there was a brave warrior princess …
MARK: I’m really sorry Amanda but we’re out of time!
AMANDA: What?!
MARK: That’s the end of the show.
AMANDA: Oh OK!
[disappointedly] Bye!
MARK: Bye!
