(10) In a movie, there are 9 children in the family. How many children must be chosen to ensure that at
least two of the children were born on the same day of the week?
Solutions
(1) b. 26
Step 1
It is given that 4 years ago the age of Nur = 15 years
Step 2
The present age Nur = 15 + 4 = 19 years
Step 3
The age of Nur will be in 7 years' time = 19 + 7 = 26 years
(2) a. 1
Step 1
We are also told that the total number of clocks are 15.
Step 2
Now, we have to find the number of clocks in class 4.
Total number of clocks = Number of clocks in class 1 + Number of clocks in class 2 + Number
of clocks in class 3 + Number of clocks in class 4
⇒ 15 = 6 + 3 + 3 + Number of clocks in class 4
Step 3
Since, = 3 clocks.
(3) a. 13 m
Step 1
We see that the height of the tree = Height of the building − 3 m
= 16 m − 3 m
= 13 m
Step 2
So, the tree is 13 m tall.
(4) b. 6 × 6
We know that in order to form a square of any number, we must break the number into two
equal parts such that the multiplication of the two numbers is equal to the product of the two
numbers.
Therefore, 36 boxes can be arranged by Sarah in rows to form a square as 6 × 6.
(5) a. 30
Step 1
It is given that Caleb has 5 pencils.
Step 2
It is also given that Aidan has three times as many pencils as Caleb.
Therefore, the number of pencils Aidan have = 3 × 5 = 15 pencils
Step 3
It is also given that Ashley has two times as many pencils as Caleb.
Therefore, the number of pencils Ashley have = 2 × 5 = 10 pencils
Step 4
The number of pencils all three have = 5 + 15 + 10 = 30 pencils
(6) 3
Step 1
We are also told that the total number of fans are 52.
Step 2
Now, we have to find the number of fans in class 4.
Total number of fans = Number of fans in class 1 + Number of fans in class 2 + Number of
fans in class 3 + Number of fans in class 4
⇒ 52 = 16 + 12 + 12 + Number of fans in class 4
⇒ 52 = 40 + Number of fans in class 4
Step 3
Since, = 4 fans.
(7) 28 m
Step 1
We see that the height of the tree = Height of the platform + doll's height + 16 m
= 5 m + 7 m + 16 m
= 28 m
Step 2
So, the height of the tree is 28 m.
(8) 32
Step 1
Here, we have to find the difference between (6 more than 11) and 49.
6 more than 11 = 6 + 11 = 17
Step 2
Now, we have to find the difference between 17 and 49.
Difference between 17 and 49 = 49 - 17 = 32
Step 3
So, the difference between (6 more than 11) and 49 is 32.
(9) 1
Step 1
We are given that stands for 5 computers.
So,
Number of computers in class 1 = 4 × 5 = 20 computers
Number of computers in class 2 = 4 × 5 = 20 computers
Number of computers in class 3 = 2 × 5 = 10 computers
We are also told that the total number of computers are 55.
Step 2
Now, we have to find the number of computers in class 4.
Total number of computers = Number of computers in class 1 + Number of computers in class
2 + Number of computers in class 3 + Number of computers in class 4
⇒ 55 = 20 + 20 + 10 + Number of computers in class 4
Step 3
Since, = 5 computers.
(10) 8
Step 1
The Pigeonhole Principle states that if some pigeons are put into the holes and the number of
pigeons is more than the number of holes, then one hole must contain two or more pigeons.
Step 2
Here, the children are the pigeons and the days of the week are the holes.
According to the pigeonhole principle, to ensure that at least two of the children were born on
the same day the number of pigeons must be more than the number of holes.
Step 3
There are 7 days in a week. So, the number of children must be more than 7.
Now, 8 is the smallest number that is bigger than 7.
Step 4
Hence, 8 children must be chosen to ensure that at least two of the children were born on the
same day of the week.
