Dead Poets Society

(A Reflection Paper)
Dead Poets Society is a 1989 American drama film directed by Peter Weir,
written by Tom Schulman, and starring Robin Williams. Set in 1959 at the fictional elite
conservative Vermont boarding school Welton Academy, it tells the story of an English
teacher who inspires his students through his teaching of poetry. After watching the
movie I realized that it was a direct approach to what happens in real life, for example
Neil committed suicide because his father forbids him from acting which was his dream.
This type of scenario also happens in real life when a person is not allowed to do his
passion this leads to depression which leads to suicide.
The movie separates the concept of passion/dreams from reality, for me this is
the main theme of the movie whether you choose success over what you love to do and
vice versa. The quote “There's a time for daring and there's a time for caution, and a
wise man understands which is called for.” Pertains to choose wisely over those kinds
of things it is either what you want or what others want.
“We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry
because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion.
And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to
sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.” This is
what hit the most because it’s a direct hit to reality, we stay alive for love and for the
people we love and we study to sustain our lives.
“No matter what anybody tells you, words and ideas can change the world.”
These are words to live by never underestimate the power of words, they can ruin or
make someone’s day, they can make or break a person and they can heal or hurt a
heart. Bruises on a body will heal. Scars will fade. But words that hurt are hard to
forgive and even harder to forget. Choose what comes out of your mouth wisely. Use
your words to bless, love, lift up, and encourage the people that you cross paths with.
And lastly the quote that inspires me the most “Carpe Diem” or seize the day it is
very self-explanatory, I love this quote simply because it mean make the most out of life
do what makes you happy and never let anyone tell you different.
