 21 percent is oxygen and 78 percent is nitrogen approximately

 Small proportions of other gases.

 The earth is 4600 million years old
 Scientists believe that there was lots of water vapour and lots of gases
that were released from the volcanoes.
 Volcanoes also released immense amounts of co2. This made the
atmosphere similar to mars and Venus.
 The early atmosphere mainly consisted of carbon dioxide.
 Water vapour condensed into the seas.
 Carbon dioxide turned into mussels and became a different thing
altogether.
 This also reduced carbon dioxide in the atmosphere
 The oxygen was formed through the earths first algae. They were
photosynthetic and produced oxygen.
 Later on, the oxygen would enter the atmosphere
 After that more plants formed on earth.
 When there were enough oxygen animals could evolve and survive.
