STYLES OF MANAGEMENT
There are(5) various styles of management onboard ship, these styles of
management are:

1. Tiger Style Management

This management style’s focus is very high on performance but low on


people or human resources

Its characteristics are:


• Believes in performance
• Very authoritative
• Have very high opinion of oneself
• Does not care about the opinion of others
• Care very less about team work
• Great leaders in crisis
• Does not like challenges
• Have tendency to do or control everything
• Does not delegate easily

Effects of this style on the team are:

• Team morale may get low

• Team members will not take many initiatives

• Performance may decline

2. Penguin Style of Management

This management style’s focus is very low on performance but high on


people or human resources
Its characteristics are:

• Believe that people are more important than performance


• Is a good listener
• Tolerance of low performance standards

Effects of this style on the team are:

• General lowering of professional standards


• Friendly and calm working environment
• Leader does not command respect
• Little training is done within the team

3. Snail Style Management


This management style’s focus is very low both on people and on
performance

Its characteristics are:

• Setting of low standards


• It has a low opinion of his or her capabilities and those of the team
• Weak authority
• Can often hide personal ineptitude by avoiding risks
• Does not use short term strategy

Effects of this style on the team are:


• Low team morale

• Very little training is done

• Professional standards can get dangerously low


4. Sheep Style Management
This management style’s focus places average concerns for both people
and performance

Its characteristics are:

• Concerned for performance, but not enough


• occasionally short-term strategies
• Low level of authority

5. Dolphin Style
This management style’s focus is high both on people, and on performance

Its characteristics are:

• Good communications and briefing


• Always uses good short-term strategies
• No problem delegating
• Knows strengths and weaknesses of team members
• Believes that it is always possible to do better
• Acceptance of challenges

Effects of this style on the team are:

• Team morale is good, but could be better

• Promising management style

• Team performances are good but not excellent

• Average training
Effects on the team are:

• Best management style

• Training is a priority

• Excellent team morale

• Team is confident

• Professional standards are high

• Team members are motivated
