Clichés

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson students should be able to:
1. Define and give examples of common clichés.
2. Identify the meaning of some common clichés during discussion.
3. Create scenarios depicting the meaning of the clichés within groups.
4. Identify clichés and state their meanings using context clues in sentences.

Materials: A Comprehensive English Course CXC English A


Content:
Cliché refers to an expression that has been overused to the extent that it loses its original
meaning or novelty. A cliché may also refer to actions and events that are predictable because
of some previous events.

Procedure:
Engage:
Teacher will write the definition of clichés on the board. Based on the definition given
students will use prior knowledge to give examples of proverbs, metaphors and similes. The
students will be guided to making a link between these and clichés through questioning and
discussions.
Explore:
The teacher will place 8 commonly used clichés on the broad. Students will be asked to state
the meaning of each through examples and discussions. These responses will be noted on the
board.
Explain:
The students will be placed in groups of 3. Each group will be given one of the previously
discussed cliché. A scenario should be created that will portray the essence of the cliché. The
class will identify which cliché is being portrayed.
Expand:
The teacher will present the students with 10 sentences containing clichés. Students will
identify the clichés and based on context clue state what they believe the clichés mean.
Evaluate:
Individual students will be selected to share their responses with the class. The class will
determined if responses are correct. The teacher will clear any misconceptions if necessary.
