Syllabus: -

1. Show extra efficiency in the following:


Fell a 22.5 cm (9 inches) scaffolding pole of not less than 12.5 cm (5 inches)
diameter neatly and quickly.
2. Have a basic knowledge of various ropes, their lay, size, storing and care.
3. Tie the following knots and understand their uses thoroughly in addition
to Pratham Sopan and Dwitiya Sopan tests knots: - bow line-on-bright,
catspaw double sheet bend, man harness knot, marline or lever hitch
draw or highway man’s hitch, fisherman bend or hitch.
4. Use figure of eight lashing, lash a block to spar and prepare any two types
of hold-fasts for different types of soil.
5. Build a model bridge or derrick and a ladder.
6. Make a camp kitchen or a raft that will carry himself.
7. Build a camp shelter or hut suitable for three occupants.
8. Pass or repass pioneer tests of Pratham and Dwitiya Sopan Badge.
9. Know how to make a block and tackle using double sheave and single
sheave pulleys.

Fell a 22.5 cm (9 inches) scaffolding pole of not less than 12.5 cm (5
inches) diameter neatly and quickly.

a) First of all, cut the branches from bottom.


b) While cutting, remember safety rules concerning at once.
c) The axe should be sharp and with well-fitted head.
d) People should be away from the tree at a safe distance.
e) Make a match about 45 degree first on the side to which the tree
should fall. The cut should go beyond the thickness of the tree. Then,
make another match exactly on the 1st match. Normally, at the three
will fall on the side where first match was made.
f) The size of the axe depends upon the size of the tree.
When it is not possible to cut a tree, erect a pole of not less than 12
cm (5 inches) diameter and demonstrate the method of felling a tree.

2. Have a basic knowledge of various ropes, their lay, size, storing and care.

Rope is very useful for scout and guide activities. It is named according to
kinds of rope – Coir, Nylon, Manila, Cotton, Flax and Wire.

The lay of rope:


The ___________ of the strand together called the lay. Three
stands laid up together right-handed formed hauser-laid rope. Four
strands form a shround laid rope.

Care of rope:
 The end of the rope must be whipped.
 The ropes should be in a coil.
 Store in an even temperature.
 If wet, dry it and store.
 Don’t drag the rope on the ground.

3. Tie following knots and understand their uses thoroughly in addition to


Pratham Sopan and Dwitiya Sopan test knots

Bow line-on-bright:
This knot is used for hauling a man up a height one loop passing
under the arms, the other under the thighs.
Cat’s paw:
Form two loops. Turn loops inward for one or two loops. Turn loops
inward for one or two complete turns and hang the eyes to formed over
the hook or object of attachment as shown.
Double sheet bend:
To join two different thickness of ropes. To make two rounds full
safety.
Man-harness knot:
To make a loop in the middle of a rope as it is also useful for making
steps and hand holes in a climbing rope. The figure shows how to make
the knot.

Marline Spike:
Small spar is run through the loop. This is used to make a rope
ladder.
Draw Hitch or Highway Man’s Hitch:
Useful to tie in any place where it is desirable to untie quickly or for
coming down a tree by rope, where the running end is left long enough to
be twitched from the ground-only. Don’t try to come down the running
end by mistake.
Fisherman’s Bend:
This is an excellent knot for attaching a rope to a ring. Take two
turns through the ring and bring end over the standing part and through
the loops. Finish with two half hitches and pill taut.

4. Use figure of eight lashing, lash a block to spar and prepare any two
types of hold-fasts for different types of soil.

Figure of eight lashing:


To form a Tripod. For lashing the top of three poles together. Begin
with a clove hitch. Round one of the ends of the spars. Take seven or eight
turns around all three spars and loose frapping turns in the spaces
between. Finish the clove hitch on the center spar and hoist the tripod.

5. Build a model bridge or derrick and a ladder.


Derrick:
It is used to transport persons or materials from one place to
another place.
Ladder:
Using marline spike, make a ladder using two ropes and sticks of
about a feet. Make a rope ladder using a number of man-harness knot at
regular intervals and same length of ropes.

6. Make a camp kitchen or a raft that will carry himself.

Raft is improved boat to travel. There are many methods of making raft: -

 Air tight tins tied over joles.


 Air tight tubes tied over joles.
 The skin of the stem of the Politian.

7. Build a camp shelter or hut suitable for three occupants.

With the use of available materials, ropes, pegs, we must erect an


improved shelter. Erecting such shelters has its own advantages. This
gives us added opportunities to learn to find for ourselves and to begin to
realize all the pleasures. Shelters should be pitched near trees but not
very near or under the them.

Blocks are used for the purpose of changing the direction for the
ropes and when made up into tackles of gaining power.
