covering of the whole body
 Guards the underlying muscles, bone, ligaments

 The first line of defense against pathogenic
microorganism as the presence of normal flora of our

COMPOSITION
 Epidermis - epithelium (stratified squamous epithelium,
keratinized)
 Dermis - connective tissue (dense irregular connective
tissue)
 Hypodermis - connective tissue (adipocytes and \
irregular connective tissue)

- Above is the composition of the cross section of the skin.


 Epidermis is made up of 5 layers:
1. Stratum corneum
2. Stratum lucidum
3. Stratum granulosum
4. Stratum spinosum
5. Stratum basale
- Stratum spinosum and stratum basale are considered as
stratum germinativum, here are cells are still active in
mitosis
 The dermis is composed of 2 layer or regions;
1. Papillary region
2. Reticular region
 Hypodermis;
1. Adipose tissue
2. Areolar connective tissue
