1. Given a population that containing five numbers 2, 3, 6, 8 and 11. If all random samples
of size 2 can be drawn from that population with replacement, find
a) population mean
b) population standard deviation
c) the mean of sampling distribution
d) the standard deviation of sampling distribution
e) the variance of sampling distribution

Ans: a) 6 b) 3.2863 c) 6 d)2.3238 e)5.4

2. The random variable X, representing the number of cherries in a cherry cake, has the
following probability distribution:

X 4 5 6 7
P(X=x) 0.2 0.4 0.3 0.1

a) Find the mean µ and the variance 𝜎 2 of X

b) Find the mean 𝜇𝑥̅ and the variance 𝜎 2 𝑥̅ of the sampling distribution 𝑥̅ for random
samples of 36 cherry cakes.

Ans: a) 5.3 , 0.81 b) 5.3 , 0.0225

3. The height of 1000 students are approximately normally distributed with a mean of 174.5
cm and a standard deviation of 6.9 cm. if a random samples of size 25 are drawn from
this population and the means recorded to the nearest tenth centimeters, determine

a) The mean and standard deviation of the sampling distribution of 𝑋̅

b) The number of sample mean that fall between 172.5 and 175.8 cm inclusive
c) The number of sample mean falling below 172.0 cm

Ans: b) 0.7529 c) 0.0351

4. The average of a bread-making machine is 7 years, with standard deviation of 1 year.
Assuming that the lives of these machines follow approximately a normal distribution,
find

samples of size 9 would fall.
Ans: a) 0.6898 b) 7.347

5. Given that the distribution of salaries of salesman is not normally distributed. However
