Subject: Seniors’ Role in Organizational Transformation & Year of Decisive Action
Dear Senior Colleagues,
‘He who can listen to the music in the midst of noise can achieve great things’,
said Dr Vikram Sarabhai, an outstanding leader, a great technocrat and an institution
builder. He is talking about staying focused on vision and direction. He is highlighting
the need to maintain calm and balance in the maze of confusion and complexities. These
are the hallmark qualities of a leader, so powerfully illuminated by the Father of Indian
Space Programme. These are the qualities that we need to dig deeper in ourselves at
this juncture in the company.
Friends, we are going through challenging times. Market/Competition is tougher
compared to earlier days, when we joined this company. Customer is more demanding
these days. Profit margin is getting reduced. Our core business segment is hit hard.
Concer for quality has become more prominent. Safety, of course, is of paramount
important. While there are many things that are beyond our control but ! would like to
invite your attention on the matters that are under our control and are purely within our
circle of influence and we need to take care, Rather than looking at external issues, can
we look inward and bring our house in order? This organization has given a lot to us and
it is time for us to reflect and return in multifold manner. We need to give a better and
stronger BHEL to our next generation which is our moral & ethical duty.
Our BHEL Values - GR-ELICIT (Governance, Respect, Excellence, Loyalty, Integrity,
Commitment, Innovation and Teamwork) talk about all those elements which make an
organization truly great. The question is — how we, as seniors demonstrate them in
action to our colleagues/juniors? In ‘Values’, we talk about “Respect”. Friends, you will
agree with me this journey begins from self — for all the Values in life. We need to stick
to our words, our commitments without fail and that itself will inspire others also
in the team. As a leader, it is our primary task to focus on decision making and its
timely execution,

We talk about being ‘customer centric’ organization. Are we demonstrating role-model
behaviors, which our juniors can pick up — as how to be customer centric? We talk about
focus on “QCDS" — Quality-Cost-Delivery-Safety. How often do we bring these issues in
our daily discussion in the department? We talk about grooming and mentoring young
colleagues. How do we deal with our future generation of BHEL? Are we monitoring only
or mentoring also? These questions are very important and I would like you to ponder
over it and take necessary action.
In this ‘Year of Decisive Action’, itis very important for “Leaders” like you to re-kindle
the spark of grooming & encouraging people, achieving results and demonstrating
organizational values so that we handover a better & stronger BHEL to our juniors. As
seniors, we have higher responsibility and we need to be inspiring and inclusive.
Let us focus on creating Action Forums in each Unit/Region/Division at Seniors’ Level
~ which will think/debate and decide on issues pertaining to organizational results as
well as organizational value/culture.
Looking forward to your feedback/comments,
With warm wishes,
Yours sincerely,
ty
