B. Determination of Importance Value of Mangrove species

1. Importance of Importance value identification

 This is used to determine the overall importance of each species in a community structure.
The index is calculated as the sum of the percentage values of the relative frequency,
relative density and relative dominance. Importance value gives an idea of the sociological
structure of a species in totality in the community

2. Identification of Mangrove Species

 Mangrove species that have been identifies in a specific community in Pagbilao are Bakauan
lalake, Bakauan babae, Pipisik, etc.

3. DBH of mangrove species

 DBH or “Diameter Breast Height” is the standard for measuring trees. This is measured over
the outside bark of the tree with the use of a diameter tape at the point forester’s call
“breast height”
 Steps in measuring DBH of a tree
1. With the measuring tape, measure the 4.5 feet up the trunk of the tree from the ground.
Use thumb tack to mark the height on the tree.
2. Wrap your string around the tree trunk of 4.5 feet. Make sure the string is straight and
tight around the trunk, and mark or cut the circumference on the string.
3. Measure the length of string to get the circumference of the tree
4. Convert the circumference measurement to diameter by dividing the circumference by pi
(3.14)
