Goal
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the Internet of Things paradigm, helping them
appreciate nature of Internet evolution and opportunities and challenges associated with the Internet of
Things.
Objectives
At the end of the course the learner should be able to:-
1. Explain the concept of the network as the foundation for connecting billions of things
2. Describe the enabling technologies and communication models that support the Internet of
Things
3. Explain the IoT applications in industry, healthcare, logistics, and personal and social domains.
4. Develop and implement an application for the Internet of Things

1 Introduction to the Internet of Things: origins; drivers; 3 hours
applications; evolution of the Internet
2 Big data analytics : Concept of big data, attributes of big data, 3 hours
challenges of big data, big data storage, cloud computing and
cloud services, distributed data processing, data analysis and
visualization
4 CAT 1 1 hour
5 IoT Enabling technologies and Automation: IPv6, Cloud
computing, RFID; Introduction to RFID; Applications of RFID; 3 hours
automation, ZigBee, Sigfox, thread. NB-IoT, LTE-cat MI
6 Internet of Things Lifecycle: Collect, communicate, analyze 3 hours
and Act

Mode of delivery:
The method of instruction will be lectures, practical laboratory sessions, presentations and
demonstrations. Lectures: 3 Hours per week.
Marker pen, White board, Computer Lab (at least 2 computers); Operating system such Microsoft
Windows/Linux & Contiki OS; Tools: Arduino board, Raspberry Pi device , Network simulation program
(e.g. Packet Tracer); Wireshark

1. Two (2) CATs 20 Marks
