UNIT TITLE: INTERNET OF THINGS

Goal
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the Internet of Things paradigm, helping them
appreciate nature of Internet evolution and opportunities and challenges associated with the Internet of
Things.

Objectives
At the end of the course the learner should be able to:-
1. Explain the concept of the network as the foundation for connecting billions of things
2. Describe the enabling technologies and communication models that support the Internet of
Things
3. Explain the IoT applications in industry, healthcare, logistics, and personal and social domains.
4. Develop and implement an application for the Internet of Things

3 Internet of things connectivity models: Device to device 3 hours


communication; Device to cloud communication; Device to
gateway model; Back-end data sharing model. IoT layered
architecture;

5 IoT Enabling technologies and Automation: IPv6, Cloud
computing, RFID; Introduction to RFID; Applications of RFID; 3 hours
automation, ZigBee, Sigfox, thread. NB-IoT, LTE-cat MI
6 Internet of Things Lifecycle: Collect, communicate, analyze 3 hours
and Act

7 Internet of Things Applications: Use of Internet of Things in 3 hours


Home, transport, health, buildings and cities

considerations; interoperability and standards; regulatory issues;

10 IoT applications in Artificial Intelligence and Machine


learning: Collaborative robots, drones, smart cities, digital twins,
smart retailers, introduction to machine learning. Supervised 3 hours

11 IoT cloud platforms: Cloud internet of things core, Cloud


Pub/Sub, Azure internet of things, Amazon web services and 3 hours

Mode of delivery:

The method of instruction will be lectures, practical laboratory sessions, presentations and
demonstrations. Lectures: 3 Hours per week.

Instructional materials / equipment

Marker pen, White board, Computer Lab (at least 2 computers); Operating system such Microsoft
Windows/Linux & Contiki OS; Tools: Arduino board, Raspberry Pi device , Network simulation program
(e.g. Packet Tracer); Wireshark

1. Two (2) CATs 20 Marks
