constants and t is a variable representing time. Determine
(i) the equation of average revenue, (2mks)
(ii) the equation of marginal revenue. (2mks)

th
(4mks)
(h) A man deposited ksh.240,000 in a financial firm for 3 years. If the money was to earn interest
at a rate of 15% p.a.,calculate the compound interest the money accrued during this
period. (4mks)
(i) A line passes through points A(2, 1) and B(8, - 3). find the equation of the line. (2mks)

QUESTION 2 (15MARKS)

(a) Complete the square on the function y=2 x 2+ 6 x−9and hence solve2 x2 +6 x−9=0.
(5mks)
(b) Given the equation of the curve , determine the equation of the gradient,
, using product rule method. Hence find the gradient of the curve at . (4mks)
(c) A manufacturer has found that if he wants to increase his output, he must lower his price. His
total revenue R from an output x is given by the expression R = x (148 - x).His production
costs are $ 1,000 fixed and $ 36 per unit variable and the total cost C = 1,000 + 36x.Find;
(i) the output that would maximize revenue (2mks)
(ii) The output x that would maximize profit. (4mks)

QUESTION 3 (15MARKS)
(a) A company making a single product has manufacturing and distribution divisions. Stocks of
finished goods are not held, all production being to order. The average net revenue per unit
allowing for quantity discounts is £100 - £0.01Q where Q is the quantity sold. The average
variable costs per unit for two divisions are;
Manufacturing = £10 + 0.01Q
Distribution = £2 + £ 0.001Q
The fixed costs per annum are;
Manufacturing = £40,000
Distribution = £20,000
You are required to calculate;
(i) The optimum annual production quantity to maximize the profit of the company. (4mks)
(ii) The profit of the company at the level of activity in (i) above. (2mks)
(b) Diffferentiate from the first principles y=2 x 2+ 5 x −4 and determine the gradient of the
curve at x = 2. (5mks)
