1.Answer question ONE and any other TWO questions
2.Question ONE carries 30marks and the other questions carry 15 marks EACH
QUESTION 2 (15MARKS)
(a) Complete the square on the function y=2 x 2+ 6 x−9and hence solve2 x2 +6 x−9=0.
(5mks)
(b) Given the equation of the curve , determine the equation of the gradient,
, using product rule method. Hence find the gradient of the curve at . (4mks)
(c) A manufacturer has found that if he wants to increase his output, he must lower his price. His
total revenue R from an output x is given by the expression R = x (148 - x).His production
costs are $ 1,000 fixed and $ 36 per unit variable and the total cost C = 1,000 + 36x.Find;
(i) the output that would maximize revenue (2mks)
(ii) The output x that would maximize profit. (4mks)
QUESTION 3 (15MARKS)
(a) A company making a single product has manufacturing and distribution divisions. Stocks of
finished goods are not held, all production being to order. The average net revenue per unit
allowing for quantity discounts is £100 - £0.01Q where Q is the quantity sold. The average
variable costs per unit for two divisions are;
Manufacturing = £10 + 0.01Q
Distribution = £2 + £ 0.001Q
The fixed costs per annum are;
Manufacturing = £40,000
Distribution = £20,000
You are required to calculate;
(i) The optimum annual production quantity to maximize the profit of the company. (4mks)
(ii) The profit of the company at the level of activity in (i) above. (2mks)
(b) Diffferentiate from the first principles y=2 x 2+ 5 x −4 and determine the gradient of the
curve at x = 2. (5mks)
(c) Given the series 12+17+27+…. + 102,determine;
(i) the number of terms in the series. (2mks)
(ii) the sum of all the terms of the series. (2mks)
QUESTION 4 (15MARKS)
x 2−1
(a) Differentiate with respect to x, y = 2 (4mks)
x + x +1
(b) If £ 450 is invested at a compound interest of 6% per annum;
(i) Form a geometric series showing the amounts in the first four years. (5mks)
(ii) From the series, determine the value after 15 years. (3mks)
(c)Find the equation of a line passing through points A = (2, 2) and B = (7, 12). (3mks)
QUESTION 5 (15MARKS)
(a) Determine the stationary point and their nature for the curve y=x 2 +6 x−9 .
(4mks)
(b) A GP is such that the first term is 2.Find two possible values of r if the sum of the first three
terms is 26. (3mks)
(c) City residents were surveyed to determine their readership of newspapers available as
follows; (i) 50% read the morning paper.
(ii) 60% the evening paper.
(iii) 20% both papers.
Use the theory of sets to find the probability that a resident selected reads either morning or
evening or both papers. (3mks)
