is a wet sump lubrication.

e (4-Stroke engine) has wet

of components and cooling of

piston. Only one oil is used for whole system. Generally TBN of AE
Lube oil is 24-30 mg KOH/gm. Chances of F.O contamination is high
in auxiliary engine, that’s why TBN of oil is kept high. Viscosity index is
also high.

AE lubrication system

AE Lubrication System

L.O Pump draws oil from sump and develop sufcient pressure (~ 4
Bar) for lubrication. Oil is passed through the L.O Cooler and oil is
cooled. After L.O Cooler, oil goes to L.O lters. From L.O lters, oil is
distributed to various lubricating points.

L.O pump is an engine driven gear pump. It operates during running

of engine. L.O priming pump or Pre-lubricating pump is electric
driven gear pump. It operates when lube oil pressure is low or engine
is in stopped condition. Priming pump must be running before
starting the engine.

L.O Cooler may be either shell & tube type or plate type. Both types
are equally popular for auxiliary engine (4-stroke engine).

L.O lters are one of the most important component of lubrication

system. There are various types of L.O lters like cartridge type lter,
candle type duplex lter etc. Maintenance of lter depends on
quality of lube oil and its purication. There is differential pressure
indicator or sensor for indicating the pressure drop across the lters.
If lters are choke then pressure drop will be high.

Three way (3-way) valve is tted for bypassing the cooler and
controlling the temperature of lube oil.

Following components are lubricated and cooled in 4-stroke engine

(generator engine):

Main Bearing
Bottom End Bearing
Top End Bearing (Gudgeon Pin)
Piston Rings
Liner
Piston
Rocker Arm
Turbocharger (If self- lubrication is absent)
Camshaft
Timing Gear
Governor (If lubricated from system)

In some turbocharger there is inbuilt oil sump and lubricating pump.

Some governor has inbuilt lubrication system.

Lubricating oil for main bearing is supplied through holes drilled in

the engine frame. From main bearings it passes through bores in the
crankshaft to the connecting rod bottom end bearings.

Connecting rod has bored channel for supply of oil from bottom end
bearing to top end bearing (gudgeon pin). Now oil goes to piston for
cooling and pistons rings. Liner is lubricated from oil of piston rings.

Lube oil for rocker arm lubrication is led through pipes to each
cylinder head. It continues through bores in the cylinder head and
rocker arm to movable parts to be lubricated at rocker arms and
valve bridge.

Lubricating oil for camshaft lubrication is supplied through a bore in

the engine frame.
For turbocharger lubrication, lube oil is supplied from a lubricating
point.

Lube oil returns to sump by gravity and again circulates for

continuous lubrication. There are pressure gauge and temperature
sensors for pressure and temperature respectively.
