• Chronic gastrointestinal disorder


• 12% of people in USA have it
• Women are 2x likely to get it
• Affects people under the age of 50
more likely than over the age of 50
• More likely to develop IBS
• Family member with IBS
• History of stressful or difficult life
events
• Severe digestive tract infection
• Types of IBS
• IBS-C
• IBS-D
• IBSM
Symptoms of IBS

Pain in the abdomen

Bloating

Whitish mucus in stool

Feeling as if bowel movement is not


finished

Diarrhea, constipation, or alternating


between the two

Worse during monthly periods


Causes & Triggers

Causes:
• Stress events
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Bacterial infection in your digestive tract
• Food intolerances
• Change in the gut’s microbiota
• Genetics

Triggers:
• Food intolerances
• Stress
• Medications
• Menstruation in females
Treatment
• Try to relieve symptoms to live a
normal life
• Managing diet, lifestyle, and
stress
• Avoid triggers
• Eat high- fiber foods
• Drink plenty of fluids
• Exercise regularly
• Get enough sleep
