Turbocharger Leaks Engine Oil or Fuel

Equipment
• JPRO® Professional or OEM Service Tool

Procedure
1. Check the engine operation for extended periods under light load or no-load conditions (slobbering).
Is any evidence of light or no load engine operation or slobbering identified?

YES 1. Verify the engine operating instructions.

Long idle time (more than 10 minutes) can result in
low oil and coolant temperatures.
2. Turn OFF the engine rather than idling it for long
periods.
3. Increase the Engine/idle speed if idle time is
required.
4. Repair as needed.
5. Verify repair.

NO Go to Step 2.
2. Examine for white smoke.
Is any presence of white smoke detected?

YES Proceed with symptom based troubleshooting. See

NextStep® repair, White Smoke.
NO Go to Step 3.
3. Examine the lubricating oil lines for leakage of oil.
Is any leakage identified?

YES 1. Fasten the fittings if loose.

2. Install new leaking oil lines if needed.
3. Verify repair.

NO Go to Step 4.
4. Remove the turbocharger oil drain line and examine for any sort of restriction.
Is any restriction identified?

YES Clean or install new oil drain line. Verify repair.

NO Go to Step 5.
5. Check to see if crankcase ventilation system is plugged.
Is any concern identified?

YES Inspect and clean crankcase breather and vent tube.

Verify repair.,
NO Go to Step 6.

6. Check if the cankcase blowby pressure is above standard specification.

Is the cankcase blowby pressure above standard specification?

YES Diagnose and resolve the blowby issue before

removing the turbocharger if the engine indicates high
blowby symptoms such as following:
• External oil leaks
• Oil dripping from the breather tube
• Pulsating air or oil spitting through the filler cap or
dipstick tubing
• Excessive oil usage
• Burning oil (blue smoke)
Verify repair.
NO Go to Step 7.
7. Check if the lubricating oil or fuel is entering the turbocharger.
Is any evidence of lubricating oil or fuel entering the turbocharger identified?

YES 1. Remove the intake and exhaust piping.

2. Examine for oil or fuel inside the pipes.
3. Repair as needed.
4. Verify repair.

NO Go to Step 8.
8. Check to see if the restriction of air intake system is above standard specification.
Is the air intake system restriction above standard specification?

YES Install new air filter and inlet piping as required. Verify
repair.
NO Go to Step 9.
9. Determine the exhaust system restriction.
Is the exhaust system restriction out of the specified limit?

YES Examine the exhaust system for restrictions.

• Repair as needed.
• Verify repair.

NO Go to Step 10.
10. Examine the turbocharger oil seal for leakage.
Is any leakage found?

YES Examine the turbocharger compressor and turbine

seals. See Turbocharger for single turbocharger
application, Turbocharger High Pressure for dual
turbocharger application - high pressure, Turbocharger
Low Pressure for dual turbocharger application - low
pressure.
• Repair as needed.

• Verify repair.

NO Go to Step 11.
11. Check turbocharger wheel clearance.
Is the clearance out of specification?

YES 1. Examine the radial bearing and axial clearances.

2. Examine the turbocharger.
3. Repair the turbocharger or replace it if required.
See Turbocharger for single turbocharger
application, Turbocharger High Pressure for
dual turbocharger application - high pressure,
Turbocharger Low Pressure for dual turbocharger
application - low pressure.

NO Go to Step 12.
12. Check the valve stem clearance and inspect the valve stem seals for damages.
Is the clearance excessive and the seals damaged?

YES Examine the valve stems and seals. See Cylinder Head.
NO Troubleshooting is completed. Release the vehicle.
